Hi all. I feel like I have a lot of questions lately with our interview date a week away. One more regarding drivers license. I desperately need to keep my Ontario drivers license for my job ( il be commuting via the Windsor/Detroit border). I will become a conditional permenant resident soon.

We have spoken with the secretary of state and the following applies. Once I have the letter from my manufacturer I import my car at poe. From there I must get auto insurance and then register car with Michigan. I can get mi plates as long as I have insurance. So I can do all this with my Ontario license. However, I'm just wondering if anyone has had experience with customs or police giving them a hard time about it. I can get a state id that shows my US address , passport visa will have the same. I just need to hang on to my Ontario license... Will probably have to put Michigan plates on my car tho. Anyone have experience with this? Can I go in and get a michigan license from scratch or will they know I

Hold an Ontario one?

Thanks for the help!

I moved from Windsor ONTARIO to Ann Arbor MI 9 months ago and brought two Canadian cars with me.

In order for you to obtain a MICHIGAN drivers license they will want to see your ONTARIO drivers license, but they will return it to you.

My wife and I still have ontario drivers licneses (which expire later this year, and I do not plan to renew them )

I suppose I could renew the Ontario licenses at a SERVICE ONTARIO kiosk if I wanted to but I suspect I would need an Ontario address to mail the new licnese to.

You do not need to "start from scratch" ( with a driver road test, and written exam, if you already have a valid ontario license)you will have to show them the ONTARIO license but it will be returned to you.

I do not carry both licenses with me when I drive. I now have MICHIGAN license pleates on both vehicles. The Secretary of state did take and keep my ONTARIO CAR REGISTRSTION documents when they issued me new MICHIGAN CAR REGISTRSTION documents.

I cancelled my ontario car insurance now that I have MICHIGAN insurance on both vehicles.

Since I cross the border quite often for work too, I have signed up for a NEXUS border crossing card which allows me to use the special NEXUS car lanes at the border crossings and at airports.

I cannot imagine a scenario in which you would require an ONTARIO drivers licnese if you also have a valid MICHIGAN drivers license.

Are you maitianing an Ontario residence? And keeping your ONTARIO health insurance card ? That is illegal and I do know someone (in Windsor) who was arrested for living in Michigan but who continued using Ontario health care while not filing and paying Ontario income tax.

H, can't tell you how helpful that is to have someone tell me

This that recently went through it! First off- No way am I keeping my OHIP I know it's illegal. I've already looked into international health insurance. Can you recommend any since you commute too and need coverage while you are in the Ontario? Did you go to the secretary of state to obtain your license in Ann arbor where they didn't take yor Ontario one or do you go somewhere else? I'm considering getting my auto insurance through progressive .

Thanks for the hell, feeling a tad anxious about this. Keeping my license is a must for my job which I want I keep for the duration of my career, that's why I'm asking where you went that they didn't punch it to get your Michigan one. And even though il be keeping a secondary address in windsor for the work week I'm aware that once u leave Ontario your ohip is not valid.

Again, thank you very much !
