Republican District Board Members in Miami Florida are attempting to change school policy to bar First Lady Michelle Obama from entering a district school to address grassroots supporters and volunteers at Barbara Goleman Senior High School. Board members Renier Diaz De la Portilla of District 5 and Carlos Curbelo of District 7 are behind this political game playing, with De la Portilla stating, “I’m going to propose a policy that extends to every elected official in the state of Florida and the United States that you cannot use or manipulate our public schools, taxpayer-funded public schools, taxpayer-funded public facilities, for political events”.

De la Portilla maintains that this is not a “partisan” based decision although he is running for the House of Representatives in Florida and is a Republican. If it isn’t a “partisan” decision, then what is it? Could be a racially based decision? What other reasons could it be?

Despite the fact that the First Lady’s visit is entirely within the guidelines of District policy, and of course there is no educational activities scheduled for the students at the time, De la Portilla rants, ““I think it’s outrageous. I believe that our public schools are places for learning, not places for politicking,”

It’s interesting that Presidential candidate Mitt Romney held a campaign event at a public high school in Colorado this morning, and this complaint was filed yesterday. De la Portilla went so far as to state, “The use of public schools whose only focus should be to educate our children for political gain is downright wrong. Don’t these liberals have boundaries? “
