There is NO justice in the application of the death penalty in the US. (or in a single other country that I know of)

I disagree :star:

I tend to agree with VP on this one, those lifers in prison get free food and shelter and we pay their way...granted it isn't a glamorous life but it is a life and that IS better then they grant many of their victims. I don't know the stats but I believe most life (and death) sentences involve murder and am basing my statement on that "belief".

There are a great deal of problems in how the death penalty is applied in this country. I'll start of with a few problems as I see it-

The poor and minority are disportionately sentenced to death. Why? They do not commit capital murder disportionately their population statistics. Money plays a HUGE factor in our legal system. The death penalty is more often given when the victim is white rather than black.

There are documented instances of innocents beign executed. This is not tolerable.

There are documented intances of prosecutorial misconduct and inadaquate legal counsel.

In Texas (where we execute more than most countries do per year) you are more likely to receive the death penalty in you lve in one county rather than another. How is this equal protection under the law?

I think the only way you canmake an argument for the death penalty in this country is to argue that it should be applied far and judiciously across the board. It is not.

Then there is the moral argument regarding the sacredness of life or the philosophical argument that government should not have the power to decide who lives and dies. But that is a whole other can of worms.

Guilty before the trial,hmmmmm

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Four soldiers from the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division will be court-martialed for the ALLEGED rape of an Iraqi girl and the murder of her family, and two will face the death penalty, the military ordered Wednesday

Can you say ALLEGED!

Not in the Military justice system.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I think the evidence PROVES there was a rape and the entire family WAS, in fact, murdered. These guys are accused of the act...which did not "ALLEGEDLY" happen

You THINK?

ACCUSED!

I agree with your comments and I agree that the legal system needs a serious overhaul in this and many other countries but that does not IMO include doing away with the death penalty... it should be revamped, I agree.

That was my original statement- there is NO justice in the death penalty in the way it is applied in this country.

I would extend that statement to suggest that it is impossible to rid the inconsistencies in the system to the point to make it fair and judicious. Thus by default - no death penalty.

the term "alleged" is used as they are presumed innocent until proven guilty. remember that phrase from your civics class?

For those of us who left our pocket bibles at home... can you give a quick quote to accompany the reference?

I don't agree that it's impossible but I won't go into that here or now. :star:
