transportation is the main issue. If they don't have an ID then they don't have a car. What about people who live in rural locations? What about the elderly who can't get around very easily

How do they get to the polling booth on election day?

How do they get to the polling booth on election day?

My great-grandma just walks downstairs (or takes the elevator.) The polling station is right there at her retirement community.

In the past (before she moved to this new place,) her husband, and later after he died either my grandmother or my mother would drive her to the polls. Or she would vote absentee.

Are you really asking this?

My local polling station is less than quarter of a mile away, they are in various places that are easy to get to. Nearest DMV is 20 miles away, and I don't live in a rural location, I live in a city. Most of the walk will be on roads with a speed limit of 45mph, some roads won't have any sidewalk, so you would be at risk of being hit by a vehicle from walking in the narrow ditches. It is 8:30 and the temperature is already 92f, it will be a long and hot walk. The DMV office is open from 8-5, when most people are at work.

People in rural towns would have to travel much further to get to a DMV, again with no sidewalk with fast moving traffic and hot temperatures. This is only possible if they have the required documents too. As I explained, in my state where they are also imposing these rules, you can't get an ID without a birth certificate. You can't get a birth certificate without an ID. This rule is clearly to prevent people from voting. Why are they worrying about this now? Why wasn't this an issue when Bush was in office and he had all those voting "issues"?

My great-grandmother didn't need the photo ID to vote (Ohio accepts other forms of identification to vote) but she needed it for other purposes.

She had a birth certificate, but of course it showed her maiden name. All of her documents were in her married name, but the DMV wanted a marriage license to support that she was indeed the person on the birth certificate. Problem was, she never had one - in her day, the priest published "the bans" in the local newspaper and that served as the license, and then they had the church wedding a few weeks later.

I do not even have to open that link to call BS. A study called common sense and basic math. The odds of winning the Mega Millions Jackpot are about 1 in 176 Million. In 2008 election year 132 Million voted.

In 2008, I cast a vote for President. I cast a vote for US Senator. I cast a vote for the US Congressman. I cast a vote each for many state and local races. And I cast a vote each on many ballot initiatives. All in all there were 20 or seperate votes on just as many separate races and issues. Now, if 132MM people voted casting a vote each on 20 different items, then there were literally billions of votes cast. And all of a sudden, winning the mega millions does become more likely than dealing with voter fraud. It's virtually non-existent and the voter ID laws do not exactly address the few and far between cases that are out there.

There's no public transportation in that state either? You need to get out of that hole. They have get out the vote help on election day to drive the elderly, homeless, etc. to the polling locations. They could do the same now to get them their voter ID's. My nearest DMV has Saturday hours. There's over 100 excuses you could use to not be compliant with the new voter ID laws, none of them are valid. Every one of us didn't have a picture ID before we had a picture ID. Figure it out!

It isn't a hole, kindly stop being so inflammatory. There is no need for your bad attitude.

There is no bus that goes to the DMV, no. It is in the middle of nowhere. What about the rest of the people in this state? Everyone should leave? Is that your solution?

The government has said they would take people to get an ID. Not sure why you skimmed over this fact, but I have stated this several times now. Let me make it in bold for you so you can't miss it.

You can't get an ID without a birth certificate and you can't get a birth certificate without an ID.

Perhaps if you spent less time being opinionated and more time addressing the facts, you might learn something.

I addressed one of your arguments, transportation. Then you add in additional claims as the debate goes on. If we could address one at a time, things could be cleared at a faster pace, but your counter replies always raise new issues to muddy the waters.

Anyhow the topic at hand is Texas, not Mississippi.

Follow your own advice: Perhaps if you spent less time being opinionated and more time addressing the facts, you might learn something. And here are the facts; you can get the birth cert in Mississippi without a picture ID. SS card and a utility bill, being the easiest two or in the poor's case SS card and Snap/EBT card. :bonk:

■ Photo Driver’s License ■ Photo State Issued ID ■ Employment ID

■ School, College or University ID ■ US Military ID ■ Tribal ID

■ Alien Registration/Permanent Resident Card ■ Temporary Resident Card ■ US Passport

OR two forms of identification from the following list:

■ Social Security Card ■ Utility Bill (showing address) ■ Medicaid Card

■ Snap/EBT card (showing address) ■ Work Identification ■ Veteran Universal Access ID Card

Holder must not have noticed that ID was required to attend the event where he spoke.

I thought the photo ID requirement was just for the media.

Because none of those are an explicit right of the constitution, other than purchasing a firearm.

And what, 2nd Amendment is somehow less important? I don't see any Democrats being outraged over the ID requirement for purchasing firearms and its effect on minorities.

There is nothing wrong in asking for ID it is just providing proof to the person at polling booth who you are claiming to be is you.

In recent years the number of illegal immigrants has gone up, ppl have voted fraudulently and as the time changes the changes in the system are required.

The same person who is claiming that its so difficult to get an Id would get an ID in blink of an eye, if they won a mega million lottery.

At that point they would not complain about how difficult it is to obtain an Id.

I thought the photo ID requirement was just for the media.

Id was required to attend Michelle Obama's book signing.

I love how these red States preach less government (in their lives) all the while they constantly create laws to increase the size of government in the lives of others.

Suppose an ID is mandatory for voting. Surely, the last thing you should use to vote should be a DL. DL's can be counterfeit or issued wanton by the same governors' who enact these laws, so it is not far fetched to presume that the governor of Texas could easily get involved in voting fraud by issuing DLs to his 'constituency'.

Furthermore, there are many illegals who carry DLs in Texas so that would really not solve anything. This must be an election year, for sure.

It would stand to reason that the only acceptable forms of ID would be either a green card or a US passport.

Alien residents are already under the obligation to carry their greencards at all times, it should only leave us with a US Passport. Welcome to the Soviet State of Texas.

Congratulations to the legislature of Texas for taking yet another step towards big government. What next? Will they pass a law whereby all Texans should greet each other with the salutation 'Tovarich'?
