99% of people don't have an ID. Lots of people don't own a car or have a bank account. I know that's hard to grasp in your world of everything being perfect.

In this state you need a certified copy of a birth certificate to get an ID. To get a birth certificate you must send a copy of your ID.

we're talking about Texas.

You must be talking about Mississippi. We have ID's in the rest of the country. From school ID's to passports, to workers ID, to state ID's and drivers license.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

No what it is harmful to is Democrats who need undocumented aliens and dead people to vote for them.

I am not sure voter fraud is as big a problem as some people try to make out. More of a way to cut as many people from the register as possible. I guess it's only a happy coincidence that most of the people being cut are more likely to vote democrat, than vote republican.

Anybody know of any substantive studies proving me wrong?

Voter ID Laws Study: Voter Fraud Even Rarer Than The Odds of Winning Mega Millions

I do not even have to open that link to call BS. A study called common sense and basic math. The odds of winning the Mega Millions Jackpot are about 1 in 176 Million. In 2008 election year 132 Million voted. Below are just a few reported cases

voter fraud in a number of states. Other media have also covered incidents of voter fraud:

  • In Indiana, Mike Marshall, running a Get Out the Vote campaign to re-elect the Democrat mayor, was indicted on 65 counts of ballot fraud.

  • In Minnesota, where a review of the state's database of registered voters revealed 2,812 dead people voted in the election that gave Al Franken a seat in the US Senate.

  • In Wisconsin where a conservative watchdog group raised questions about voters listed at a state senator's properties; some votes were allegedly fraudulent.

  • In Texas, where of 25,000 registrations submitted by Houston Votes, only 1,793 were allegedly legal. The same week the voter fraud allegations surfaced, a fire occurred at the Harris County Elections Center.

And the more I think about, it is absolute blind stupidity to suggest that the Democratic Party could have any other reason to fight voter ID laws. Can anyone be gullible enough to actually believe they are doing it to keep minorities from being denied the right to vote. Just be intellectually honest and admit it helps your team win ,

riddle me this then.. Why isn't the Democratic party fighting laws that require people to show an ID for the below activities. They seem to be only interested in Voting an acclivity that prolongs their ride in power.. Why not help ease the disenfranchisement on the below requirements. Give me a break. So the Dems are cool with a 60 year old Minority man having to show an ID to buy a beer or purchase cough medicine, but think it is a violation of his rights to make him show an ID to have a voice in the future of this country.. Come on people we are not that freaking stupid. Rant over.. Have a nice day. It's ok to have to show an ID to check a book out at the library but not to vote. Are we keeping minorities from visiting the library.. Geeezh Sorry Rant was not quite over.

The cool thing about these minorities who have to drive a long distance?

They have buddies with cars and free time to take em in to the ID-getting-place.

Quit yer b|tching - Texas is huge - one has to drive to get anywhere regardless.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I tried to explain my great-grandmother's ordeal in obtaining her very first photo ID in an earlier thread. She'd never had one before, but certainly had voted in every election, opened a bank account, written checks, rented an apartment, etc. without it. (She never learned to drive, so she never had a driver's license.) She never had a marriage license, as she was married "by bans," which was the custom back in the day in a distant town.

I didn't say she should be exempt from new rules - I said there ought to be some kind of assistance for people who are elderly and might have difficulty getting documents from more than 3/4 of a century ago in order to get a photo ID under the general requirements.

Well, the usual gang didn't want to hear anything about it - it was all her fault for 1.) being old and 2.) having pre-dated new requirements (no "grandfathering" in grandparents, I guess.) One response even accused her of being a welfare queen leeching off the system ! (because she didn't have a job. At age 101.) Another thought it would be just as well if she didn't vote at all.

Hopefully, none of these people will ever have to deal with becoming old :innocent:

Wow, if I remember rightly, even old people are entitled to vote. :P

Many people need assistance with getting an ID, transportation is the main issue. If they don't have an ID then they don't have a car. What about people who live in rural locations? What about the elderly who can't get around very easily and may not understand the rules or have the required documents?

Because none of those are an explicit right of the constitution, other than purchasing a firearm. That is done for safety measures. Poor argument, as usual.
