You mean like the Real ID Act? So far, all but four states (Washington, Illinois, Utah, New Mexico) are complying, with Washington offering the option to purchase an ID that meets the standards of the act.

Precisely. It would be the Real ID Act, taken to a national level and run by the Federal Government.

Interesting to note that Texas is not complying with the Act... It must be an election year...

All states issue their own id's now, nothing has to change, just make it mandatory for everyone to have one. The age of 16 would be a good place to start. Give people the option to get a state id if they opt not to get a drivers license.

You are changing your initial premise. The Federal Government cannot mandate the States to do what you propose. It would have to be enacted by each state individually, and yet it would still create the same legislative issues of constitutionality and enforceability.

For the record, I am not saying you're right or wrong. I am just trying to point out the scope and breadth of such an endeavor.

My initial premise is that every USC should be required to carry a phot id, I'm not changing that premise at all. However it needs to be done, just do it.

This map provides a more accurate picture on the real ID status which, 7 years after passage, is still not in force.

It's quite simple really.

If you are a United States Citizen and are a normal, functioning, law abiding member of society, you will have an id. If you do not fall in to the category above, then you probably shouldn't be walking the streets, let alone voting.

I have yet to hear a reasonable response from anyone as to why every USC should not be required to have a photo id.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

That ought to give us some indication as how easy it would be for the Federal Government to institute and implement legislation towards a National ID.

The States cannot even agree with simple standards concerning their own DLs!

Exactly.

Furthermore, isn't it hypocritical that Texas of all states, shout be seeking legislation concerning mandatory ID's?

Its legislative passed two bills in order to repeal the Real ID act...

This must be an election year.....

Why are states opposed to it? Does it usurp their authority or cost them money?

We see often at the local level some resistance when the state or county passes things down to the local municipalities or when the state or county asks the municipalities to give up control over certain things etc.

Is it accurate to assume that state's will respond the same way to the Federal gov't?

I like proving the dishonest wrong.

I read this far. You like waltzing into threads, making some ignorant comment and thinking you're right about it. You are always wrong though, you seem very desperate.

I haven't changed the parameters, you changed the parameters. You need an ID to get a birth certificate, for which you must pay $15. I wasn't aware that you could charge people to vote, I guess I missed that part of the constitution. YOU were the one who brought up the other forms of ID, one of which is SS card. Please provide the list of documents required or just shut up and admit defeat.

All states issue their own id's now, nothing has to change, just make it mandatory for everyone to have one. The age of 16 would be a good place to start. Give people the option to get a state id if they opt not to get a drivers license.

Are you going to pay for their ID?
