When filing out the papers there is an area that asks for social securit number. My wife has a card that looks like exactly like a social security but says that not valid for work. It was given to her so she can be claimed as a dependent when she was younger. Do I put that nmber in the social security area or do i leave it blank? Technically its not a social security. I am guessing its what is comparible to an ITN number (Given so some in the states can claim a family member in mexiconas a dependent in mexico). So should i put the number in the social security area or leave it blank?

I'm not familiar with the card you're talking about, so take this with a grain of salt - however, if it's not a social security number, the you've kind of answered your own question, haven't you?

Pre-VISA

November 14, 2009 - met randomly in a park in Atlanta, talked 1 hour

November 16, 2009 - started emailing daily

December 11, 2009 - flew to DC for a weekend to visit

January 5, 2010 - JL flies back to Germany :(

March 17-23, 2010 - I visit JL in Germany

September 1, 2010 - I move to Germany!

September 9, 2011 - Married <3

German Visa

December 20, 2011 - applied for German visa

February 9, 2012 - interview

March 26, 2012 - temporary 18 month greencard!

US VISA

April 3, 2012 - mailed I-130s to Frankfurt

April 11, 2012 - NOA1 mailed

April 13, 2012 - I-130 payment authorized

April 18, 2012 - NOA1 received

Impatiently waiting for NOA2......

If it's an ITIN, it will say "Individual Taxpayer ID number". Otherwise, it is a Social Security number, just as a K1 visa holder would receive upon entry.

Well i know its not an ITN numbe because ITN's are issued by the IRS. This number was issued abour 20 years ago and it is on a Social Security (identical to my social security car but below the numbers ia the "Not to be used for employment" So i guess it is a social security number! Thanks for the replies!

It is her Social Security number for life. It was assign to her by SSA. Once she gets her Work Authorization, then you can have SSA issue her a new card without that restriction. All it means is that she cannot use it to work. You can use it for tax purpose like being a dependant. Apply for her work authorization. Use her SSN on all documents that requires you to fill out an SSN.

ITIN has a different order of numbers. For example SSN is XXX-XX-XXXX.

I hope this helps.
