Go to the link and apply for "Visa on arrival", You'll get the approval letter from them and get your visa at the aiport. Total cost is around $45 for 30 days visa. I used their service 4 times in the past to get my visas.

Hi - If your spouse is Vietnamese, you can apply for visa exemption. Every visit is maximum 90 days with no visa required. Application is super simple and easy (and quick) at VN Embassy in DC. We did it in 2010 and paid $40 I think.

Since you are going for 6 weeks, you need a 3-month visa. If you plan to visit any other countries while there, you will need a 3 month multiple-entry visa, otherwise a single-entry is fine. I suggest that you do not get the loose-leaf visa. They will take that from you when you leave Vietnam and you will have no evidence of being there.

If you live in San Diego, there should be some kind of tourist agency that can help you get a visa, though they may charge more.

You can also do what Anh Map said and apply at the Embassy in DC.

- You can apply up to six months in advance

- Go to the Vietnamese Embassy's web site,

http://vietnamembassy-usa.org/services/visa-application-process

- Call the consular section to get the price. The prices are not posted because they have dual pricing for westerners vs VK, so you have to call them and tell them what kind of visa you want.

- Get your passport photos

- Print the application forms and fill them out

- Include a self addressed, pre-paid Fedex, UPS or USPS overnight envelope (something with a tracking number) with your application

- Send to the Embassy with your passport via Fedex, UPS or USPS overnight envelope (something with a tracking number)
