some of us know the difference between a bear, a backfire, and a blinder - hence why we're not worried about this incident.

Consider it is the incident that never was because the Russian planes never entered US airspace according to the snippet which is the basis of this thread. They were never intercepted because they kept their flight plan within the boundaries of their country.

But then again, when you look at it this way it takes away from the hyperbolic excess required to make something out of nothing...

It's no different than Louis XIV alleged 'I almost had to wait' ... rofl.gifrofl.gifrofl.gif

You know what is even funnier than your "front Porch remark... The fact that you poking fun at a "front Porch" remark she never made. It was a Saturday Night Live skit, and not what Palin said. Of course most liberals in America as, usual never let the truth stop them from forming an opinion..

What Palin actually said was that "They're our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska": which is true.

Darn Liberals say the cutest things.

Yeah I know It's Bush's fault etc etc,

I never attributed the quote to Palin. You're right. You libs say the cutest things...rofl.gifrofl.gifwow.gif

I guess you missed the article that said there were 16 incidents in just a few months time were Russian bombers were intercepted by US and Canadian fighters. The reason they say Canadian fighters with it also is when our F-22's were pulled they had two Canadian fighter wings come to Alaska to help cover our air space.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I must have. I have only perused the unaccredited material to which the link in the OP refers. An 'article' would presume copy published by bona fide news agencies, of which there are none.

All the same, I don't give into fear mongering much too often as a personal preference.

I can understand that when a poster such as yourself is in full troll mode that they might miss some of the post on threads. It can't be easy.

Nothing about fear mongering. It's about facts. Your opinions don't equal the facts posted on this thread.

An intercept is made when "unidentified" aircraft approach sovereign airspace. Same thing happens around UK airspace. The Russian aircraft never enter sovereign airspace, and the interceptions are made in international airspace, with the NATO aircrew making a visual identification of the target. The Russian aircraft may be carrying weapons, but the NATO interceptors invariably are armed.

Apart from a gap in the late '90s early '00s, these sort of things have been routine occurrences. Sometimes it's a simulated attack run, as this case appears to be, and sometimes it's an ELINT flight, gathering as much information as possible on the radar emissions of the ground stations and intercepting aircraft for further analysis back in Russia. NATO uses these occasions to gauge their QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) response times.

People might laugh about the "Bear H", but most of the ones still flying are younger than the B-52s flown by the USAF, as Tupolev was still building them in the mid-'90s. You're never going to mount a sneak attack with them, but they have a range of over 8,000 miles, so, with in-flight refuelling, there aren't many places they can't reach - if only the crew aren't deaf by the time they get there.

The "Bear" is very loud. The Russians never quite got those huge turboprops' contra-rotating propellors properly synched. The resulting drone is loud, intrusive and carries for miles. I saw one at RIAT Fairford in 1994. It took off, did a wide sweep over the Wiltshire countryside, returned for one pass and then landed. And you could hear it clearly for the whole 20 minutes. It was noisy. Very noisy.

These flights and launches serve several purposes, other than the obvious training of crews, and the testing of weapons systems. With the launches of the ICBM's in the 1980's, the Soviets's knew of the launch before the support crew at KMR usually did. When the fishing trollers showed up, you could expect to be busy, or inconvenienced, depending upon your job description. Same when the Soviets or someone else was up to something that could be observed from KMR's radars by looking over the horizon. All sides kept the world informed, so that nobody panics when a launch or a training exercise happens. It just took a little while for that information to filter down to the peons that kept the place operational.

Putin aint playin around. He's testing ol' Barry to see how many apologies he can get without anything actually happening.

"I am, uh, sorry, that uh, we, uh, well, that our troops, uh, that they uh, almost uh, flew close to your, uh, planes. The previous administration, uh, created this problem, and uh, I, along with the American people, will, uh, fix this even if congress, uh, isn't with us. The Russians must, uh, pay their fair share."

All the same I tend not to give into fear mongering and that's my prerogative. Some choose otherwise.

In the end it really doesn't matter.

LOL. The issue with the Bears is the same with all other Soviet-designed aircraft in which they have little or no sound insulation so all the noise from the engines and the air reverberates inside the cabin. I am surprised the pilots can establish any type of communications while flying them.

I agree these aircraft are very capable but they aren't the fastest gun in the Russian toolbox. They have an enormous cross section and can be seen all the way from the moon with the naked eye. Not the best way to make an entrance and most definitely I would not use one as a getaway car if I were holding up a convenience store!
