Hi,

Ive been researching different health insurance companies because i'm moving to NYC in sept. I just want to get "emergency insurance", something to cover me in case I get into an accident. I contacted Empire and they told me I had to be living in the US for 6 months before I'm even allowed to apply. Is this the case for all insurance companies?

Can someone please advise

Thanks!

No that's not the case. However, plan to have it not cover preexisting conditions because as a Canadian you don't officially have insurance (unless you've been private) so you've had a lapse in coverage.

If you do a search on VJ, you should be able to find some as this topic comes up a fair bit. One just has to pay with your search wording.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Agree 100% - there's always someone with the same experience you're about to go through. BTW some companies regard coming from Canada a good thing since you've been covered by provincial healthcare, they are aware that Canadians are generally well cared for. Just look around.

I see you're K1 - why not have your fiancé do some research - he/she will be more familiar with NY insurance companies. Will you not be added to his/her coverage at work?

Try this website it looks helpful: www.ehealthinsurance.com/

Some of the more common NYC insurance companies are:

Oxford United Healthcare

GHI

Aetna

Guardian

Emblem Health

You should be able to find something, you might be paying anywhere between $300-$600/month, but there are options if you are willing to pay.

Removing Conditions

Sent package to VSC - 8/12/11

NOA1 - 8/16/11

Biometrics - 9/14/11
