living and working in china for 5 years i had a hell of a lot of guanxie, and i am not ethnic chinese.

i had 40M$ per year in a SEO foundry and machine shop that was managed by a national party member.

i met with the premeir, wen jai bo, on more than one occasion that made CCTV9.

i had local staff that had guanxie, and i imported and gave away lots of 1/2 pound hersheys chocolate bars, zippo lighters, and sambuca.

knowing how to tell a real Branson Pa made zippo from a chinese fake and being able to explain it as you make the gift is half of the art.

hell, i still have guanxie there.

Can you explain to me how to tell a Chinese Zippo from a real one?

My first guess would be that both your Branson made one and the Chinese one are both fakes, because Zippo Lighters and Case knives are both made in that same factory in Bradford PA. a little South of the Alegany State park and the NYS border line with PA.

You did just give me a good idea for a few gifts though.

anyway, the difference is seen after pulling out the insert. there are small notches in the bottom edge of the sheet metal wick housing that can be felt with a fingernail, but not readily seen. chinese fakes will lack this feature, which is an artifact of the sheet forming process.
