UK Divorce Decree

I am in the process of getting my paperwork together to file I-130/I-485 concurrently whilst in the US. I have been divorced in my past, but my UK Decree Absolute is just a single page from Llanelli County Court, no signature at all - just a stamp in the top right hand corner indicating the Court.

I showed it to my American wife and she seems to think I should have something more substantial to send in with my paperwork. Am I missing something? or is this truly all I need to send in?

Thanks!

This comes up quite often but yes, that is all you get in the UK. It does sometimes cause a problem with USCIS. Someone who filed the I-130 around the same time as me got an RFE for theirs but mine went through with no problem. If you put UK divorce decree in the search bar on this site you should find some discussion as to how best to indicate that this is the real document. I am on my phone at the moment or I would send you some links but basically people generally suggest sending in a colour copy so the stamp shows up and highlighting the lines that say this is a decree absolute etc.

Good luck.

I've answered this question a bunch. People have overcome RFEs by trying my method. Here's a copy/paste--

Before applying, I had read that people were getting RFEs because they were not recognizing it as official. Here's what I sent and it was accepted with no RFE

  • A color copy so the red seal shows up.
  • Yellow highlighter over the sentence from "it is hereby certified that said decree...." and continuing to "...marriage was thereby dissolved."
  • Highlight "DATED:xxxxxxxx"
  • Yellow highlighter on the teeny, tiny print in the footer that says "Decree of Absolute (divorce)"

Although I'm sure many people have just sent in the divorce decree and not had an issue, there are also people who did get an RFE (including myself). Save yourself the agro and follow Nich-Nicks advice! :)

Thanks to all that contributed.

I've followed Nich-Nicks advice and have color copied the Absolute and have highlighted the mentioned parts. In my opinion, it now looks much clearer. Thanks!
