Well,,, yall know i am already whining about the high prices from JFK to HKG with CX this fall. it is around $1200 for my ticket.

if i wait till august or september to purchase it, will it be cheaper?

are you using special ticketing agent in Chinatown, or no?

There are cheaper flights to HK NOT on CZ - I like CZ also but I go the southern route, LAX to CAN so I like using CZ.

There are other special ticketing agents in LA for CZ, also - so if your local Chinatown ticketing agents are craps, choose another city

I honestly doubt it. Fares have been on the $1k+ mark for most international long routes. In all honesty I think that fare on CX to HKG is a steal especially if you're talking non stop service. I've been looking for fares to LHR, CDG and MXP and they are just about the same as your fare.

Consider checking out with other airlines via Europe for they may have better fares with a longer flying time however.

I have no experience with Hong Kong flights. I have made three recent flights to PEK, October 2011, February 2012, and June 2012. The most expensive one, by far, was the June 2012, second was October 2011, with the cheapest being in February 2012. All three were non-stop from SEA -> PEK, on Hainan Air. My qualified advice is to try to book your flight as far away from peak vacation time, i.e., June through August, to increase your likelihood of getting a reasonable fare. I have heard of some evil rumors that the airlines are gradually increasing their fares across the board.

I think A&B is right about summer vacation prices - looking at the same direct flights I have already taken three time between Chicago and Hong Kong on United, for the first week of August it is $1700, but if I check prices for the last week of August/with returning the first week of Sep, the same flight drops to $1100 ($600 cheaper!)

i just talked to some day traders in the airline industry. they said it is cheaper when you buy it around september because of less people flying and lower contract prices for airline fuel.

@stevo you should look at CX from ORD to HKG because it is cheaper. you can also get direct ship from HKG to zhuhai in an hour... the last ship is at 5pm hkg.

Like Steve022, I found that tickets are a bit cheaper end August and on into September than for travel mid-August or earlier. But, to answer your question, you take your chances. Although the summer travel season is over, and demand will be down shortly, theoretically leading to lower prices, the price of crude oil, at an all time low, could go up based on many factors (military action in Straight of Hormuz or world conflict over Syria, OPEC reaction to counter reduced demand with increased price, etc.). Depending on preference of routes/stops, you might find Nippon Airways with stop in Tokyo to be more reasonable. Check out Budgetair.com

Hi Unlockingsky - I know Cathay Pacific is slightly less than United, and they pretty much mirror United's direct flights back and forth between HKG and ORD, but it's just that I collect many points on United because of Business travel during the year (company preferred airline). I bet CX is a better flight experience than United, as well.

Congrats on finding a good price!

Actually, there is a Ferry direct from HKG to ZhuHai, don' t even have to leave the Airport - Go through customs at the Ferry station in ZhuHai. Last Ferry is at 8 or 9 pm (can't remember).
