Floods kill 78 in southern Russia

At least 78 people died and thousands of houses were flooded after torrential rains, storms and landslides hit Russia's Krasnodar region near the Black Sea, according to local police.

Novorossiisk, Russia's largest Black Sea port, halted crude oil shipments on Saturday, a spokesman for oil pipeline operator Transneft told Reuters.

Sixty-seven bodies including that of a 10-year-old were found in the region's Krymsk district, while nine others died in the Black Sea resort town of Gelendzhik and two in the port of Novorossiisk over the past two days, regional police spokesman Igor Zhelyabin said.

The Emergencies Ministry said an average month's rain has fallen in the region within just a few hours. Television footage showed flooded streets and people scrambling onto rooftops.

"The region is in transportation collapse,"

Transneft spokesman Igor Dyomin said. The port of Novorossiisk had stopped crude oil shipments but Transneft's infrastructure was largely unaffected, he said.

A spokesman for the port, which handles grains as well as crude oil, said the outlet had cut shipping volumes and the port's administration had called an urgent meeting.

"Of course, we limited shipments, the port is located in the lower part of town, the whole landslide has moved towards it. As we speak, the rain has started again," Vladimir Sidorov said. "I will have more detailed information after the meeting."

Last month Transneft forecast crude exports from Novorossiisk would fall to 3.38 million tonnes in July from 3.61 million tonnes in June.

Wife is on the phone right now with relatives in Russia. They live a few hours away, but were supposed to visit Gelendzhik in a few weeks for a vacation. Guess they won't be going. The blame seems to be focusing on the opening of a dam to lower lake levels in the wake of the tremendous rain. Downstream was the problem as I understand it.

Were people warned this was happening?

Very tough situation. Reminds me of Hurricane Irene that hit the North East last August. My town was devestated including my home with over $100,000 damages. Good thing in my area there was no loss of life. The mud and damage that is left behind cannot be explained by words. Then there is the emotional trauma to deal with. :(

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Monday a national day of mourning in the wake of devastating, raging floodwaters that tore through streets in the southern part of the country and killed more than 170 people, according to Russian media reports.

It's hard to put the devastation of a natural disaster into words. The gulf coast still has very visible signs of Katrina, it takes so long to recover. :(

Last year they opened a spillway here to divert the flooding from the Mississippi river after heavy rainfall. It flooded many homes, but they were warned in advance so that they had time to move themselves and their possessions. I wonder if these people were warned?

No FEMA and or NOAA like we do here.

And no looting on a mass scale like we have here.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."
