Your reading is correct, which indicates that more study may be helpful to get this right. It all starts with a petition filed by the US citizen spouse.

Follow this VJ Guide >> http://www.visajourney.com/content/i130guide2

Your spouse will be the primary sponsor regardless of your incomes. If needed a joint sponsor can be used to meet the requirement.

i read a story on here about someone with a k1 visa got married 92 days should have got married before 90 days and got denial of green card , ,i just realized we got married after the 3 month visa waiver ( i did say 2 1/2 month but i was mistaken been 7 years and i forgot )i came on was up got married 4 days after now will that affect us ? did we have to get married within 90 days on a visa waiver i am not sure or can we go and just fill the I-130 form with the other forms ? ty .

You are not a K-1 visa holder, so ANY information or advice based on a K-1 visa will not apply to you. You need a I-130, most definitely. I am not even going to explain the rules and purpose of K-1, so as to not confuse you. No K-1 advice will apply to you and your situation. Follow the guide linked above. That is the one for you.
