Hi everyone,

I had my AOS interview in Norfolk, VA today, and had my green card approved.

The lady that was my adjudication officer was very nice.

She went over our application to make sure all info was correct and current, asked all the required questions (are you a terrorist, etc.) And she reviewed the supporting documents for our marriage.

I had sent out a copy of our joint lease with our application. For the interview I took our joint account bank statements (two, one for the latest month and one a few months ago when we first joined accounts, to show that we had the joint account a while), my car registration in both our names, and our cell phone bill which includes my hubby's phone number as well. (Pictures too, taken in the last couple years.)

The officer looked through the documents, and circled the parts where it showed that both our paychecks came into the joint account, and also seemed to check the phone records to check if we were calling each other on a regular basis.

Then she told me that my application was approved and that I could get my name changed today if I wanted. I hadn't planned on doing this today, and I had no documents using his last name. After hearing that it would cost a bunch of money to change the green card once it is made, I decided to hyphenate and put his last name after mine.

It sounded like the green card will come with the new name, and that I would need a new ssn because my legal status had changed. (I did have a ssn that I could make for summer employment.) So my question is,

Do I have to apply for a new social security card, or will it come in the mail with the new name?

Also, now that my legal name has changed, do I have to go and change my name for other things? Passport? Driver's license?

Do I just take the green card and show it to people to get bank records etc. changed?

I would appreciate any advice from anyone with a similar experience!

Finally thank you visajourney for helping me get through the process!

You need to change SSN and then everything else yourself.

Did you get your marriage certificate with the hyphenated name, or with your maiden name? I'm not sure if the GC alone will constitute as a legal method of changing your last name - I know marriage certificate does. Maybe someone else will know for sure.
