I just read one of the Consulate reviews and am having apoplexy.

I am to POE on Monday morning. My car, a Honda, is less than a year old (August 27, 2011). I do not have a letter regarding the emissions and when I spoke to the service people at my dealership they said I did not need one.

Please, please tell me the service people are right. I don't think I could handle not leaving on Monday.

Contact CBP. I'm pretty sure you need one to actually import the vehicle. You can bring it across the border for now, but you'll need to show it meets the standards for safety and all of that to actually import it. They usually have to send away for it. It takes about 48 hours to get it. I got one from Ford. That's the only reason I know. Not sure about Honda's policies. Also, if there is a lien on it, you'll need to pay it off or get a letter form your bank/financing company saying it's okay for you to import it. Most Canadian financers don't allow you to import it to the US because they are giving up their collateral because they cannot go to the US to get their vehicle if you miss a payment.

I spoke to Handa Canada Finance today and told them my new address. They were fine with it. As I will now be in receipt of my CPP, which payments are made into the Canadian account that pays this loan, Honda Canada was fine with it.

I also thought there was some EPA sticker on the frame of the door but keep forgetting to look to see if it really is there.

Ah, this is all so confusing.

I guess u need to go and look at ur car and see if the sticker is on ur door and sometimes its in the engine department or on the hood. There was 1 case where the POE officer would not accept that sticker, but thats prob in the minority! 1 can contact honda canada and see if they can email/fax u the paperwork. Ensure u have ur VIN handy

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

You'll probably be fine crossing the border with your car. There are lots of Canadian plates here in San Diego during the winter.

Check with the Dept. of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in the state you intend to make your home. The DMV will have information about registering out-of-state vehicles.

California has a very strict emissions standard. Here is the California rules for registering an out-of-state car; https://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr9.htm

If the sticker is on the door frame or under the hood that says it meets the EPA standard, you'll be fine. If not, you have to have that letter from Honda.
