Timeline

Use the IRS withholding calculator. It will give you a good idea how many exemptions you need to claim for either single or married filing status on your W4 so that you can come as close as possible to breaking even when you actually file your return. It takes into account a lot of different scenarios, including how much you've already made and how much tax you've already paid this year.

My W4 says single with 11 exemptions. Obviously, I'm not single and I don't have 11 dependents, but my tax withholding is nearly exactly what I need it to be. I usually end up owing the IRS a few hundreds dollars, which is just about where I like it.
