Read the title to this thread. (It refers to the US! There is a Moscow in Idaho. I have never driven there. I don't know about any US Seouls or Beijings)

Well what happens in them thar furrin lands gives us an indication of what can happen here

Unless we think we live on another planet and the rest of the world isn't even worth acknowledging

However, if we do refuse to acknowledge their existence, we can see that our refusal to build a decent rail system like them, means we must chose between walk, bike or drive -- or stay at home and finger through our bibles or polish our guns or watch porn or all three

As our population is growing and our infrastructure is crumbling and not growing, I reckon 3rd world comparisons are valid and its going to get busier with no alternatives - so more cars , more trips. Oh and the President has reduced gas prices from $4 to $3 so encouraging car use

Not as busy as them furriners coz china has 1,500,000,000 people and the other guys are breeding like ground squirrels on powdered Rhino horn too - but busier than now

FWIW, I think that we actually showed the rest of the world some of the problems that could occur many years ago. Now we are possibly maxxing out in number of cars or yearly miles driven (It won't be until we are really out of this recession that we will be able to know this) but, yes, Moscow and Beijing have horrible traffic problems. I would add, from my experience, Kyiv. I am sure many other cities worldwide are experiencing or will experence this. It is too bad the social/cultural neanderthals among us are trying to prevent us from being a world leader in solving problems such as these.

Yes I am off to the Yorkshire Dales in a few weeks. The traffic in Leeds is really bad but they have had a light rail since the mid 1800's and its superb.

Electric, silent and cheap and 15 minutes from where I will be staying in the countryside into Leeds City Center. It runs every 30 minutes. Leeds is about a million people - same as Milwaukee. The County of Yorkshire has a bigger population than Wales or Scotland or Ireland. Its busy.

The Republicans have scrapped the new line from Chicago to Milwaukee and Madison and Minnesota because we didn't have it in 1776 and so we don't need it now. Jesus never traveled on a train and we need to follow him in all things.

I think it could be sold to the public as a smack at the Saudis - they would all vote for that

The French (aaaargghh) have a system where you drive your car onto the train and drive off 600 miles way..

Having just driven Seattle to Wisconsin, I reckon that would be mighty handy

So I see US car usage increasing a lot over the next 25 years, and then declining in 50 years when we get our infrastructure going.

The US will not get angry about these things until they become the number 2 economy - and that is at least 25 years way as we are 3 times the size of China who is number 2

Things must get bust before they get fixed

james bond had revolving license plates for just such a problem

They were fitted by an Irish mechanic and both numbers were the same !

Nice and all but I am from a country where the Gendarmerie carries AK47 as side arm (not pea shooters like a 9mm over here) so tend to stay on the good side of the law. Yes?.

So Obama did not bail out GM,, that is what you said??

No, that is not what I said. Not sure where you read that. I merely stated my surprise that he - as you suggested - built a plant to restructure the company. That was news to me. And I am still not convinced that that is true.
