My husband's interview is coming up July 16th, I am traveling there to attend the interview with him.. If he is issued his visa that day I know it takes 5-10 business days for him to receive it and we will be purchasing a plane ticket for him to travel with me back to the US once he does receive it. I know this might sound like a silly question but here goes. Do we purchase a one way ticket? I assume we do but I just want to make sure. Thanks everyone. We are so excited that our long journey is finally at this stage!!! kicking.gif

Since he is coming to the US to stay, you can buy him a OW ticket. However, I am almost sure you will find a cheaper fare if you buy a RT ticket. For some inexplicable reason, some RT tickets cost less than a OW. However counter intuitive, it is true.

Good luck for you both !!!

Edit note: It goes without saying that once I posted the above I decided to take a look just to confirm and it turns out that in some airlines the OW fare is indeed cheaper. There is one particular airline - I checked 8/29 - is charging $ 786.00 for a OW ticket AMM-JFK with a connection at LHR.

Congrats for the interview and I hope all goes well!

As to the ticket... either is fine. Like others have mentioned, sometimes it is cheaper to buy round trip, rather than one-way. That is definitely the case for me (flying to and from Australia).

yes we have been looking at plane fares and for sure a round trip ticket is less expensive, but if we go that route I wasn't sure if they would question it at POE or even what we would put for a return date.

A one way ticket it is..... Unless you want him to return back to his homeland....lol...

Congrats and Good luck on the interview!

LOL.. no way do I want him to return, unless he goes back only for a visit and not for awhile!!!!! And thank you!!!

If you were to buy a RT ticket for him, you would not need to mention a return date, for his intentions will be to stay and there is no harm in telling the officer you did what you had to get the cheapest ticket, although I am sure the officer will not question nor verify anything to that effect.

It is definitely cheaper to get a round trip ticket.. I usually try to think when is going to be my next time in my home country. You can also contact a few airlines and ask which one has the less penalty fee for changing the date in flights!

Good Luck in the INTERVIEW!!!!!!!

thanks so much. I guess this whole process just made me a little paranoid. I just want him here and I want a smooth POE for him!

LOL. One thing you need to be prepared is that once he has his visa on hand, everything will be terribly anti-climatic. The arrival at the POE is easy, smooth and non-eventful because on a IR/CR visa he will arrive in the US as a permanent resident already. The envelope in his hand is as good as the green card itself. As such he doesn't have to do anything other that be sent to secondary to deliver the brown envelope, sign a couple of papers and off he goes.

His arrival will be no different than yours or mine, in terms of stress, and I understand that after all the minutiae involved in the process it is hard to imagine that there is nothing else to do, no more waiting, no more RFEs, nothing. It is the end of that particular line and the beginning of another part of the journey, which will be your life and journey together.

it will be a huge relief that POE will be anti-climatic. At this point we really need a break from all the worry and stress for a little while. I suppose when it comes time to remove conditions it will all come back to us again. rofl.gif

Many people purchase a round trip. POE will (most likely) understand. It's cheaper after all.

Make sure when he gets here to cancel the other way so you don't run into problems with immigration later.

Also, by canceling, you might get a credit for a future flight.

Also (again), some airlines offer discounts for people immigrating. You can call around and see what the scoop is.
