You don't think that there has been and still is prejudice against blacks in EVERY state of this country?! Slavery was the most extreme and state-sanctioned expression of that prejudice to be sure. But the effects of the sins of prejudice are insidious and far-reaching. You ask about student achievement scores. What is your point? Do you want to draw everyone into a politically incorrect discussion of race and intellect? I hope not! Or do you imply that someones worth as a person is reflected by their IQ?! Prejudice and discrimination are morally wrong. Period!

So your point is: Those closest to the bomb are no more likely to be effected as those at the farthest distance?

Bigotry and prejudice in one corner of the country has a universal effect all across the country?

I've already told him that Mississippi has the worst ranked education system in the country, regardless of the race, it is the worst. It has the highest rate of poverty in the country too. I don't see what his point is other than his biased agenda that constantly pops up in every thread. Same for Run Herschel Run, ignored the facts and instead spreads propaganda.

Again we are trying to compare similar groups to appreciate the effect of social policy and rather than compare those effected you want to broaden it to compare whole state scores... States which are wildly different in composition.

What is it you are trying to avoid here?

You're the one avoiding the facts. EVERYONE does badly here. Where are your facts? You haven't presented one, just your biased opinion. Your argument is null and void.

No I simply asked the question because I have not looked up the data yet and that question is Do Blacks scholastically achieve better in places where historical oppression never took place.

You believe there is a meaningful correlation, .....that Blacks in say Oakland or Madison are excelling while it's those Southern Blacks who are still lagging.

If I get a minute I will see what I can find on it but I myself am "lagging" when it comes to locating stuff via search engines.

#1 Dead is dead.

#2 Unfortunately, yes! We are a mobile society and very little separates us anymore from the problems in other areas.

I know there is a correlation. You never once asked the question, you presented your opinion as facts.

Catch up to what? Blacks in the South are on par with Blacks in detroit, Chicago and most other places in the North.

And why are not Blacks who live in areas that never had slavery doing remarkably better than Black in the South?

-just a question.

Where is that place? Seriously! Besides which, because people have moved around so much, the descendants of slavery are everywhere, as are the racism and bigotry that have affected minorities and blacks in particular, even those with no ancestral history of servitude!

It's pretty simple isn't it? :bonk:

My point to Danno is that he ought to either quit with the thinly veiled racism or just be upfront about it like the skin-heads! He is not asking valid questions. He pretends that slavery, and perhaps 'jim crow' laws were the only forms of prejudice and discrimination that could have affected blacks when any sane and even slightly educated person knows differently. It is his apparent agenda to justify bigotry and discrimination that bothers me. Especially considering that some others of his posts he pretends to some sort of 'christianity' as well!

I don't think anyone mentioned the "ability" of Blacks, so you can put your "racist" shield away.

We are talking about simple "CAUSE AND EFFECT".

The charge is commonly made that Jim Crow, has dwarfed the achievement of our Blacks in those areas.

So I asked - is there a meaningful difference in the scores between blacks in the south and other groups of Blacks around the country.

It would be no different than if one were to claim a certain chemical effected the height of say white children in a town..... yet when we compare those kids to similar kids far removed from the Chemical factory we don't

really see much variation. Would asking the question or doing that research indicate a hidden agenda... a dislike for short white people or a suggestion that those questioning the validity of the effects of this

chemical were motivated by a "veiled" agenda to prove someone is inferior?

This is not a question of "ability"..... thats another conversation, we are talking about the possibility of our education system getting off easy with the handy excuse of "the residual effect of Jim Crow".

I suspect this gives "cover" to educators and social scientists who are managing a trillion dollar education industry in which some stats project barely half of Black males even graduate High school.

This was not always the case, many people have documented that Blacks are regressing, the progress made except in a few areas has been in decline since the 60's.

What do we do?.... we throw out ole Jim Crow as our scape goat...... even in places in which Blacks had never known Jim Crow.

Yeah I know I bring up stuff no one wants to touch... but to my DWL (Disingenuous White Liberal) friends I would say - you have got to get past the lip service. You are failing a large segment of our people with these silly excuses and diversions of "Racism". Meanwhile the hood burns.

So I will try once more. You pretend (or worse, maybe you are actually unable) not to understand what is meant by the legacy of Jim Crow laws.

First, you make the absurd assumption that this legacy only affects those who live in the areas where slavery and jim crow laws actually existed. Even though it has been pointed out to you that people have moved a great deal in the years since slavery existed you continue to flog your dead horse of wanting to compare achievement scores regionally to prove or disprove this.

Second, the overall effects of this involves deep-seated attitudes created by the past experience of slavery on the parts of those who were enslaved as well as those who were the oppressors. These cultural attitudes are passed on generation to generation and have become a widespread part of American, black and white, culture. These attitudinal problems are very real and very debilitating. We all share in the responsibility to continue doing whatever we can to heal those wounds of the spirit. Yes, I know, you and I did not personally participate in owning slaves. But as the heirs culturally of this we still share some responsibility. And money is not the answer, not directly anyway. Some of the answer to overcoming these wounds has to do with creating opportunities for social mobility. Other things we must do is try to rid ourselves of the poisonous attitudes of racism and bigotry that still prevail in many spheres within this country.

Much of the answer must come from within black culture itself. But how do we expect young black children to follow black role models into positions within society such as bankers, doctors, lawyers, etc unless there are such individuals out there leading the way?

The election of Obama has been a sign that we may be making progress. The attitude of the GOP and the tea party in trying to block anything he tries to do even if the country is hurt in the process has been dis-heartening. It is one thing to disagree honestly on policy. But to have attitudes like the birthers is absurd! It is stupid and destructive. You must ask yourself, am I part of the problem or part of the solution.

So, do you still think it would prove anything to compare blacks scores in Mobile vs Detroit?

Slavery ended in 1865. That was 147 years ago.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

When did widespread racism, prejudice, and bigotry end?

What's that have to do with Danno's question about test scores in different parts of the country or even shooting deaths? I know enough about Affirmative Action, SBA along with scholarships and school admission policies not to forget black colleges to have a gist on this topic. It seems like otherS here are new to all this yet chose to jump in on the subject at random.

It's hard to argue against fact that include charts, graphs, and statistics.
