The one he is working so hard to avoid claiming to make.

Danno please! You are hardly engaging in science, and so contrary to scientific theory and thought it would be laughable except you stick to your hockum like glue.

Danno has made his point and the numbers back it up. My post doesn't refute that, it shows that the numbers are more than convincing that the Jim Crow states are right on par with the rest of the country. In fact, just for kicks I averaged out the scores for all of the Jim Crow states and guess what the number came out to be? It is 128, the exact same number for the national average. Another thing to make note of is that 5 of the 6 top performing states amongst blacks are Jim Crow states.

Yes Miss, Ark and Alababma are at the bottom as far as the scores for Jim Crow states go, but that in no way has anything to do with them being former slave states. That theory simply doesn't hold true whether it's the "deep south" or the Mason Dixon states. Georgia and Texas have 2 of the highest scores in the country amongst blacks. Wisconsin(121), Penn(120), Ill(120) and Rhode Island(122), are the lowest performing northern states, and they are right on par with Miss, Ark, and Al.

Then Gegel, apparently you missed Danno's actual point, hiding behind his Jim Crow argument with himself, since those of us familiar with his body of work never bit on his ruse.

And anutha thing,

Blacks vote Democrat religiously

Miss is the Blackest state in the country

According to your numbers they are also the Most conservative state (50%)

What is so surprising about this? Most people who live in this state live in rural locations and cannot get out to vote. Many people are also unable to get away from work to vote. If you had read my post on poverty you would know all about the problems relating to poverty here. There you go not reading stuff and just rambling on about nothing, you never change.

Jamekia was 18 then. At 20, she lost a baby girl when she went into labor prematurely.

...

For young women like Jemeika Brown, transportation is another problem. Now five months pregnant, she hitches rides to Medicaid appointments in Greenville, over 30 miles away.

"I had to get a ride up there, and I had to take proof that I was pregnant ... and I need an ID, and it was hard to get all that stuff," Brown said. "Last time, I think, I ain't need all this."

Jamekia's cousin Krystal Allen has a baby buried in the Hollandale cemetery too. He died at four months after a visit to the emergency room when he was having trouble breathing.

...

Krystal was 17 years old then. Now she's 20, a mother of two, and seven months into a high risk pregnancy. She hasn't yet made it to Greenville to see a doctor. She can't afford the fare. She can't even afford a tombstone for her son.

Clearly you don't understand this so let me explain this to you in simple terms. Every woman needs access to healthcare when they are pregnant, it is very dangerous to not see a doctor on a regular basis. She is 7 months into a high risk pregnancy, not a "normal" pregnancy, but a high risk one. She cannot get to a doctor because she does not have transportation. This is not unusual of people who live in this state. As a result MS has one of the highest child mortality rates. Do you think people like this are able to go out and vote? No. Many of them do not have an ID, let alone transportation. The new voter ID law means even less democrats are going to be able to vote. Are you really unable to fathom such a simple notion? You live in a fantasy world. Wake up.

As if it were "facts" you only needed to change your viewpoint.

EVEN SO DANNO's hunch was dead on (again)

Go to the interactive map here. http://nationsreportcard.gov/science_2011/g8_state.asp?subtab_id=Tab_5&tab_id=tab1#chart

You can click on race or other categories to compare between states.

In this example go to the map and click the "Black" tab it will allow your curser to scan each state and the score will appear and also a note if it was above or below the national average for THAT group.

For instance Blacks in the former slave State of SC Scored 128

Blacks in the State of Wisconsin (far from Slavery or Jim crow) scored on average even lower at 121.

This is not an unusual comparison, even the states in which the Southern state did score lower... it wasn't by much and in no state is the Black test scores show anything but dismally behind the average White/ Asian score.

So I think it's time for the defenders of "historical excuses" to put up some data if they have it which shows any EVIDENCE where Jim Crow is behind our Black students test scores being in the basement.

Are you capable of answering a question? How is it relevant to compare scores of current black residents of various cities or states to prove or disprove a lingering effect of slavery or 'jim crow' laws? Do you believe that these laws somehow poisoned the very air, water, or soil in those places? You must understand that people have migrated a great deal between cities and states in the intervening years. Have you even tried asking yourself how it is that a residual effect might be possible? That answer might help you understand why your whole 'point' here is really quite pointless! If such an effect exists it could be due to attitudes inherited through family upbringing. It could also be due to a more general 'black experience' cultural basis. I am sure many other possibilities exist but those would seem to be the most reasonable. How many black residents of Wisconsin derive their ancestry from slavery and 'jim crow' states? How does that compare to current black residents of South Carolina? And if the effects are an overall cultural phenomenon even those numbers would be irrelevant. But you have persisted this far with your little one-trick pony show and I expect you will keep trotting out that poor, tired, clumsy pony again and again no matter what anyone says! :bonk:

The civil war was over 147 years ago. There's every kind of program under the sun not to mention african americna colleges to boot. You have Asians, Indians, etc... that immigrate to here and they do just fine in school. It's about culture.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I think you are probably right about the culture thing. Slavery and 'jim crow' did a lot to shape black culture and the effects may be long-lasting. How does one go about re-shaping that culture? Much of that must come from within black culture but the rest of us may also have roles to play in allowing the opportunities for success and consciously avoiding racism in thought and deed.

He doesn't seem to understand the lasting effect of slavery. He suddenly brought in Jim Crow to try and back up his argument.

The mentality of people in MS is very different than in Washington. I know this from previous experience, which is why I looked at data for that state. Apparently I cherry picked it because it didn't suit his argument. It showed quite clearly that scores were higher there than any of the southern states. There are so many factors to include in why certain states do better than others, for all people. Mississippi is terrible for everyone in every category, from household income to education to obesity to poverty. On those grade 8 scores, Mississippi was below average for everyone, so it is only logical for black students to be below average.

In every small town in this country there are racist people, north and south. Ignorance knows no bounds. The difference with the south is that you can find it in the cities just as much as anywhere. The KKK sticker I saw on the truck was in a city, the tag was from the county of that city. I've also seen other racist things like the "don't renig" sticker, also in the city with the tag being from the county of the city. Most people here assume if you are white you must be racist, they get confused when I take offense to hearing the n-bomb or stories about "Mexicans" or "Vietnamese". I've heard it all. While people think it is acceptable to behave in this way nothing will change.

Why do "black colleges" exist? To stay away from these crazy, negative people. Not everyone that goes to them is black, anyone is welcome. Racist attitudes are obviously not welcome there.

Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA), located in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the United States, is a private, coeducational, liberal arts college with the distinction of being the only historically black Roman Catholic institution of higher education. From its founding Xavier has embraced a special mission to serve the African American Catholic community; however its doors have always been open to qualified students of every race and creed. Today 25.1 percent of its enrollment is not African American and 74.3 percent are not Catholic.

Take a few months off and travel around the entire continent of Africa and then get back to us on this.

This thread all in all was actually productive.

I think we all learned something here and though some won't come out and admit it, the facts we discovered even surprised me.

I mean everyone knows as a collection of states the South lags in test scores, in part due to the high concentration of Blacks in the region......

New_2000_black_percent.gif?t=1242084004

yet still we were able to show that when it comes to Black students alone, they are actually doing pretty good when compared to other blacks.

The regretful thing is Blacks are in no way living up to their potential. I have an opportunity due to my work to meet a lot of Blacks and black families.

Those situations where the Father (or even step father) is in the home are markedly different than this trash you see hanging on the corner. The kids from these homes, are almost always well mannered and respectful and seem to have more purpose when you have conversation w/ them.

I am convinced the root problem is the disintegration of the Black family.... not poverty, not some ubiquitous ghost of Jim Crow.... it is the family.

Regretfully I don't see a way anytime soon of fixing or the rebuilding of the Black family. If I had the energy I would detail why.

but to be frank, it's really not my problem. I am willing to help individuals but I owe the Black "community" nothing.

In fact, they owe me as I am a contributor to the system and the community.

Bottom line is- Libs have built this whole "Great society" apparatus and there are way too many milking it .. financially, politically or emotionally to end it.

So the Black folks are screwed and all the while the outrage and call to action is on a handful of 70 year old white guys holding some "White preachers Convention" out in the middle of no-where.

In this case, I think it would be fair to the Black community [sic] if you could elaborate a little more on what it is they owe you. The statement you make is broad and it would help you dissipate any misunderstandings as to what you mean.

Back on topic, my question still remains as to whether there is anything anyone can do to ensure blacks - and people of other skin colors alike - would have a way to go to heaven and join the chosen few. Personally, do you agree with the pastors' position and it is all lost for the non-whites? If so, are they wasting their time trying to be good Christians, since there is no hope at all for them?
