all one has to do to see how effective banning guns would be in the above scenario is to look at crime in Illinois.....

I don't think Illinois has done enough to get the had guns out of Chicago - and anyway, whats the point when the other 49 states are awash with them

My husband has a gun in his car, he's never had to use it. Neither of us are sure he would have time to get to it if we needed. I feel some kind of security in it being there when we go to questionable areas of New Orleans, but what good would it really do? Maybe I'm just bitter because I don't know how to use it.

I know that they were conficating firearms (some courts would say illegally confiscating firearms), but Hurricane Katrina was a perfect example of where the second amendment would have been useful to protect yourself against looters and others who would try to take away your property.

I was thinking how long it would take to round up all the hand guns in the USA. Generations certainly, but the sooner we start the better. The objective is to get hand guns out of the hands of robbers and burglars. The Jamaican yardy boys and a few others have a few guns in the UK, but gun crime is simply tiny compared to the US. The crushing downward pressure on illegal guns has worked

These big societal changes can be done - look at the civil rights act where black people were allowed to sit anywhere on the bus and marry white people. That would have been considered impossible and 'never' in 1960

I live in an apartment at the moment and there is a huge underground garage. I feel so sorry for the women here who get out of their cars and their heads shirk down into their shoulders and they are much afeared. What a way to live. Their fellow citizens don't care if they and their grandchildren and their great great grandchildren in a hundred years a have to live in the same fear. The hand gun owners on VJ simply do not care and their only answer is to kill the killers and keep on killing forever

I can't imagine a scenario where an american would prefer to defend the country with a handgun rather than a rifle or shotgun

I can't imagine the USA being physically invaded by a country where a rifle or shotgun or hand gun would be of the slightest use. In fact the country would be white hot glassified sand and the foreign power would wait for the radio activity to die down before coming to drill for oil.

This thread is tightly defined and restricted to hand guns - the USA and Canada can get on just fine without them

A mandatory penalty of 10 years in prison (same as UK) plus a high "buy in" price by the government would reduce illegal possession pretty quickly. The crack heads would be stealing their friends guns to hand them in for good money

I'm sure we could get on just fine without them for now. It's difficult to use a rifle for home defense, though. That's why they create other types of firearms for urban warfare and tight spots. Hand guns are easier for tighter spots.

I wouldn't be so naive to think that those days are completely over. Just because America hasn't been invaded in a couple hundred years, it doesn't mean that it won't happen again. Just look at the Pax Romana. Hundreds of years of peace (what the Romans saw as peace, anyways), and then it all began over again. Don't think it couldn't happen to America.

My point is that any war that would threaten the integrity of the USA would be fought with nuclear weapons and not rifles

In fact the idea of 'them' coming here is out of date - seeking better farm land is not a very moderns scenario for conflict

Fighting off 1,500,000,000 nuclear armed Chinese is no reason to own a 38 special

The only reason the US went to Iraq was knock out their weapons in circumstances where they couldn't incinerate the whole population from afar and get away with it. They had no other reason to physically invade

A country attacking the US would not be subject to that same restriction and would incinerate the US from thousands of miles away without coming to the west coast and running about in the sage brush with rifles

They always says people get ready to fight the last war rather than the next war - you can see it in the VJ keyboard warriors who actually think there would be a role for their pop guns if they got in a real war with China or Russia

It would probably be over before they could find their ammo box

I remember going on a nuclear war course where we were told what would happen.

At the end of the week, the instructor said "I have been told to tell you what to do and you have learned it , however I am a specialist in this business and I know a lot - if it happens, I wont be running around commandeering buses like you - I am off home to F the wife to death !"

At the time of that course, a normal thermo-nuclear device yielded 50 megatons - the Hiroshima bomb was 200 times smaller

We don't need a handgun ban, we just need tighter control of handgun sales. I fully support laws that stop straw purchases - i.e. waiting periods / limits per month etc.

I don't know this newspaper above, it's the best I can do while driving in traffic.

I say no to a handgun ban. The majority of murders around these parts of the country take place in Killadelphia, Camden and Chester City. The majority of these are black on black crime over drug territory, a baby momma or a perceived slight(street cred). So even with a ban on handguns, they would still have disputes and try to kill each other. And since most are unemployed or have illegitimate income(drug dealing) they don't have health insurance; now we'll be paying even more for their care as they'd be stabbed or beat to near death with bats. Obamacare will fix that??? Maybe that's how he's got their back and they'll come out and vote for him in November?

Yes, I fail to see why they thought this was a good idea. I don't think the constitution applies under martial law. No one can argue with the military pointing assault rifles at them! I totally disagree with these actions, I just wanted to point out that it has been done before and it can be done again.
