Child to follow ?

Does anyone know what the age limit is for a child traveling alone is?

The child is 14. Our first thoughts were for the child to follow after a month, but if she needs an escort the cost gets beyond my already strained capacity.

I plan on calling the airline today to find out if they offer any kind of child escort service, but thought I would throw it out here to all of you who have done it.

Thanks

In most US airlines children 12 and above can travel alone without the need for an escort. You can opt to have an escort if the airline provides the service and you are willing to pay for the escort's fare.

Is she near an airport that has a direct flight to the states? If so I would look into flying an American based airline. You should be able to arrange for her to be escorted from the check in desk to the gate and onto the plane. I do not know how the US immigration and customs will like a minor traveling alone. You might want to call the airport that will be her POE and verify they will not have any problems. If you call make sure you get the persons name, date and time of the call. Give that information to the child just in case there is any problem.

The minimum age at which minors can travel alone varies from 12 to 15 on a handful of lines. However, you could ask for airline escort. My fiance works in the airport and you could request for it.:) your kid will be safe as long as he/she follows the instruction

Will he travel alone? Our concern is through immigration for one.

She will start in Xi'an to Beijing or SH, then to the States Laguardia or O'hare then on to Niagara Falls/Buffalo. Long flight for a 14 year old alone.

Has anybody's step child don this out there? What about through Immigration? Do they handle these kids with care or bully them? Living on the Canada border and dealing with them I know what azzholes they can be.

He will not be "following to Join" until 2013. He is going to finish out his Middle School "career" in ZhuHai, living with her ex. He will then join us next year, and start his High School "career" in the States. We haven't thought too much yet about whether he will travel alone when the time comes, since it is still many months away. But I will also be very interested in what any VJers who have already delt with this situation have to say. Thanks

Did some research. 7-11 requires and special child care which can be purchased through the airline. Basically they tend to the child through out the travel and guide them.

You can also get this service at your option for 11 - 17 year olds through the airline. I will probably do this, just so the child is a little more comfortable. Yuncheng to Niagara Falls NY with 3-4 stops will be a long ride alone for a 14 year old little girl from a small town in China.

If Buffalo is your closest airport, I would be looking in to flights into Toronto and go pick her up there. You should be able to get a direct flight from Beijing or Shanghai or Hong Kong. You might have to look into the immigration logistics in Canada but having an active US visa you likely would be OK.

Not an option. She would need a Canadian visa as well.

Justb gets more complicated. But good thought.
