Congratulations on your arrival. I remember quite some time ago a bashing you were taking from some of the VJ group. I won't go into the details about it, but it was totally uncalled for.

I hope those that felt the need to bash at least take the time to congratulate you as well.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

Have a wonderful life together in USA. Did you click yes on your DS 230 part II so that it can be mailed to you?

Congratulations  I know your journey wasn't an easy one.

Did you come in on a CR or IR-1? If it was the CR-1 (married less than two years on entry) there is nothing else for you to do until 90 days prior to the 2 year anniversary of you entering the US, where you will need to apply to remove conditions. If it was the IR-1 (married 2 years or more then there is no conditions and nothing to do until you apply for citizenship.

You wont have to wait 6-7 months for your green card. It should arrive in 4-8 weeks. Mine took 7 weeks to arrive.

Congrats!! Thats the standard chatter, 6-7 months, but you should get it much sooner.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Bashir my husband came on CR1. He checked the box on his DS 230 and his card arrived within a short time. He was told the green card would take some time. Look at our timeline.

05/10/06 Visa in Hand

05/23/06 Home

06/05/06 Social Security Card arrives.

06/12/06 2 Yr. Conditional Green card arrives along with 4 Welcome to the USA letters.

07/31/06 Driver's License finally in hand.

she also told me that i can work get a drivers license, and ssn number after she put the rubber stamp on my passport,,,

You will be able to work once you have your SScard number and in our case less than a month. The drivers license (check your dmv) they require the green card, birth certificate, and ss card before they will allow you to take the written test. In my state you have to take the written and road test again for anyone applying for a license.

DMV info: http://www.dmv.org/ Go to this site and click on the map for your state and it will take you to the office you need to apply with. Also, in our state we have many local offices but one for the whole state that does immigrants. You cannot apply but to the one office. So check on this for your state as well.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Mary

Edited to say that what I stated was for my state and your state may have different rules and regulations. I know we had issues trying to work without ss card number and getting him on my banking was impossible until we had all of the above documents.

Welcome!! Good to see that you made it. Don't bother about the 6-7 month talk, the GC will come in a couple of months max. Depends on the Port of Entry, how quickly they send the information. But the SSN can drag. It took me 2 months to wrench it out of them. The GC came 2 days before that.

Good luck!!

Since you checked yes on DS 230, your SS card should be mailed out to you. You did not need to apply for SS Card. Your GC will also be mailed out to you.
