OK I know there are a lot of political folks on this board sooooooo....

Can someone give me a quick breakdown of the system? Who makes state law?

Congress is the one on break right now to campaign right? So their elections are coming up? When? Does it vary state to state?

There is a list of more than one congressman for my state (SC) but one that's in my district. So does that mean I can only vote for or against that one? The one in my district? Or can I vote for all of them?

Can I only contact the one in my district if I need to complain about something?

What does a Senator do? They make federal laws? Can I complain to them too about state law?

  • You can vote for the Rep (Congressman) for the district in which you live--who is also the one to contact.
  • Senate is a second chamber, somewhat of a "check-and-balance" against reps (so that the large states such as CA, TX, NY, FL cannot just collude to pass laws detrimental to less populous ones such as AK, ND, SD, MT--which could get passed by simple majority in House, but no majority in Senate) as it has equality (2 apiece) between states. A similar system has long been demanded in Canada by the western provinces--rather than the strange one in place since 1867. Yes, you can complain to senators about state laws (though only the two representing your state). One third of the senate is up for re-election every two years (as opposed to all of Reps)

State laws are made by your state legislative body. The US Congress makes federal laws.

2006 is an congressional election year. At the natinal level all 435 seats in the US House are up for election and 1/3 of the seat seats. This occurs every two years. These elections are held on the first tuesday following the first monday in November.

States will also often hold their state elections on this same day.

You can ony vote for the US house member who represention your district. You can vote for your 2 senators. Each state determines who can vote (as long as their requirements do not violate federal law) and most states require residency (in texas for example you must register to vote 30 days before the election in order to vote).

You can complain about state laws only to yoru state legislatures.

hope this helps

What is that branch called? I mean who are they? The mayor? The governor?

The legislative branch consist of your State legislative body. (state Congress, state assembly, state legisture - all called something differently in each state)

All states, but one have a bi-cameral legislative body. So your state has a 2 chamber body. This gives you a state congressman from your district and a state senator from your district to contact.

Mayor is the exedutive for the city level (carries out the law) and Governor is the executive for the state level. You want yoru state congress who makes the laws.

In my state the branch that make state laws, laws that affect NY only is the State Senate, The Governor is like the president of NY, and there is also a state Justice. Each of the 50 states have state government very much like the national government. There are some things that are left to the state to control, thus the rule in the federal government about "States Rights"

If you are thinking about becoming a naturalized citizen you may want to get to know how the local, state, and national government works.

Think of the state governments as smaller versions of the federal government. The state governor corresponds to the president on the national level. I think the name of the legislative body varies from state to state, in CA the legislature is composed of the Senate and the Assembly, corresponding to the federal Senate and House of Representatives. A mayor is the head of a city.
