Hi,

I am Canadian citizen and my wife is an American. This is long and bizarre.

We married and she came to Canada - got her permanent residency in Canada (2003). For family reasons we needed to get her back to the US so I applied for a green card and got it in 2006 - moved to the US. I worked there and we lived there until mid 2011 when my job went sour and I couldn't find anything in my state or even close. I got offered a job in Canada in a beautiful place and we came back. My wife re-established permanent residence here.

As we were getting ready to leave the US my green card disappeared. I am pretty sure what happened to it but it doesn't matter - it was gone. I applied for a replacement but did not get it before I had to leave the US to take work here in Canada. Thus I do not have a physical card. It was a 10 year card but now I have been out of the US for over a year I assume it is a moot point anyway. From what I understand my status as a permanent resident of the US is now relinguished.

Guess what - we are not happy here at all (to put it mildly). I suspect that I need to stay here until I retire (5-7 years) and then retire in the US (unsure of health care of course).

My questions:

1. Should I desire to re-establish myself as a permanent resident of the US do I have to start the process all over again?

2. If we were able to find me a job there - things do seem to be picking up - could I somehow get to the front of the line based on my previous residency?

3. Should I be doing anything now to position myself better to re-enter at some point?

I have a million more but let's start there. Please indulge me - this is not at all intuitive.

Visit your local US consulate and have a discussion. You'll have a better understanding of your options then.

What did you have in mind. Saving?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
