Finally! Pearson POE review

I arrived at the airport super early, around 3:30 am. My flight was at 6:53 am.

I checked in then had to wait for customs to open up at 4:30 am. There was a line-up outside the customs doors, so if you're going to be on an early flight get there with plenty of time to spare!

Once we were into the "customs cathedral", I got in line and waited to approach an officer at primary.

When I approached I told him I was entering on my CR-1 visa. He wasn't 100% on what to do. He made a quick phone call to confirm some procedural things, attached my documents to a clip board and then pointed me to secondary. We had some chit chat, asking me if today was the big move day. I gestured to my cart carrying 4 massive bags of luggage and told him yes. He was a good dude and didn't give me any issues.

When you walk into secondary, you approach the first officer you see. There was only one there at the time, so I introduced myself and handed over my clip board. There was one other guy waiting in there before me. I took a seat and began waiting. I forget what time I got into secondary, but I was out by 5:30 am. I think I was waiting around for about 40 minutes. Anyway, things got busy in there. Lots of travelers were being sent in, so again - get. there. early. One other officer came in to help lighten the load. Once the officer who took my paperwork was finished (he was juggling me and a few other people) he called me up and told me to bring my bags. He had me open each bag and then he went through them. This is something I had not read about before on POE reviews, maybe it's a new policy, so don't be surprised if they go through all your things. He took my thumbprint (with ink) and got my signature for my green card as well (before the luggage search.) Once he finished inspecting my bags he handed back all my paperwork then sent me off. He was also very nice, not too chatty though. You exit secondary behind the point where you hand over your blue customs card (they keep it at secondary) then you're off to security checks... and the rest everyone is familiar with.

I haven't gotten my SSN card yet, but it's only been 6 business days.

Don't wait, go to the SSA office to get it taken care of. You could be waiting for months and have no SSN show up - it is a spotty process to have it mailed to you

Don't wait, go to the SSA office to get it taken care of. You could be waiting for months and have no SSN show up - it is a spotty process to have it mailed to you

They say to wait 10-14 BUSINESS days until u go to the SSN office! But yes do not wait too long. Take along an already filled out SSN application just in case) along with ur passport (with I-551/stamp in it) and your birth cert for ID. Congrats

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

The expiry date will even be on ur greencard--just subtract 90 days

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

Went to the SSA office. The chick was giving me the run around at first. Then she thought I was on a K-2 visa (durrr.) Finally was able to look me up properly, saw I had no application put in. Submitted it and told me to wait to get it in the mail. She told me I'm actually supposed to wait 21 business days from POE to get my SSN, then if it doesn't come to go to an office as I run the risk of getting two SSN cards.

ROC date is easy. Take June 22, 2014 and subtract 90 days

i had My POE at Pearson too.. Thank God everything went fine, i did not have my bags checked but I left the room with only 20 min to be aboard. I didn't miss my flight. By the way, I haven't applied for SSN yet, I have been here for a month today, getting married this weekend, so I have my old SSN when i was here in the past. I am just waiting to get married and change my name so I can start getting my documents. Does it sound I might have problem for waiting that long?

Why apply for SSNas soon as possible?
