he

Wow! He has a huge family. When I visit my husband its just He and I, and we visit the family in the village. Friends come over to see me, but they never ask me for anything cos my husband is not having it. Lol. They think that cos you are American that you are rich. They really dont know any better. Your husband should explain that to them.

Explaining and them believing are 2 separate things. Father had 3 wives, so I guess the wives were a bust lot. As igwe( king) I guess he was trying to replenish the kingdoms population. Part of the problem was is uncle , not wanting to put out of his pocket, had told the family I was very rich. We had a brother in law that was in the US last year so hopefully he has spread the truth ( about our actual lifesyle and the uncles forked tongue) There are a lot of people that come to Joseph with their issues, both as eldest and next in line.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

I always thought the water from tap (unless coming from a well) was unsafe to drink? Olami was the tap water you drank from a well? Just curious...

It is, up to a point. Now, are we talking regular well or borehole? I can maybe possibly drink water from a borehole in a pinch but never from a well direct.

I'm sorry, but I would never recommend drinking water directly from a tap or well in Nigeria. The water is not tested and there are many waterborne diseases rampant in Nigeria and you never know when one could be in your water source.

Bottled or "pure" water is not that expensive and worth your health. I have lived in Nigeria for four years and NEVER drank straight from the tap or even cooked with tap water. Even my husband does not drink the tap water (regardless of the source). For that matter, he won't drink it here in the US either!

What is a borehole? and how is it different from a regular well? (sorry city girl at heart  )

Well:

It's the most common one and has a physically larger opening. It is not as deep this leading to potential infiltration by matters. You're basically digging a hole where water seeps into and then you either manually pull it up with a rope and bucket or install an electric pump.

Borehole:

Similar to an oil well and goes to great depths onto the water table. The water from a borehole has to be pumped as the opening is very small. The water quality is very high (I still won't drink unless I boil it first).

I have a well with a pump. It first goes into an elevated tank, then filtered into another tank. Then the water goes into the household pipe by gravity. The restrooms tap are not filtered yet but the kitchen is. So water from the kitchen can be used to cook if it's boiled (rice, yam, etc).

There's a significant cost difference. Wells can be dug for N20-N30 and boreholes start from N120 (these are not Lagos prices whish are higher). For boreholes you will need to do an engineering study as you're going straight to the water table.

I don't know any Nigerian that will drink straight out of a tap by choice.
