I read the manual, and took the practice test. I passed first time, but it was close, because it was somewhat heavy on the "how many feet to stop" kind of questions, which requires memorization and I suck at that these days. A friend of mine took it, failed the first time, and said the second test was much easier.

Oh, and yes, I am in Houston, I took it at the one on Gessner. Long wait - I ended up being there for 4+ hours. My friend went to one just off the 45, later in the afternoon, and she didn't have to wait at all.

Edited for cruddy spelling.

did you google for a sample test yet? I found a lot of them in my language, Japanese. I took the test in Japanese too. Pretty sure there are many English test samples available online. Look through them several times and you're more than good to go.

Rather than suffer through hours at a Houston-area license office, have someone drive you down to Angleton, about 45 miles away in Brazoria County. Much faster there, si man.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Or Galveston. Or Dickinson. Or Texas City. Or...

That Gessner office can be brutal in the delays.

Tips--practice, practice, practice. The first thing you do for most of the tests is the parallel parking. If you can set up a couple of flags (or un-lit tiki torches on some dirt), this is a good way to get your practice in. Do it repeatedly. Don't forget to use your turn signal.

In some Houston offices, you have to make an appointment for the driving part. My son used a driving school and had his driving part of the test with them. I'm not sure if that is an option for everyone or just minors or what, but it might be something to check out.

Good luck. Once you've passed it, come back to this thread and give an update for anyone searching for info in the future. :)

Go to a DPS office and ask for the yellow handbook and study that. It's free. The first of the book is about teen drivers and penalties for them. There are a lot of questions on the test about that, so don't skip over that part because you're not a teen and it doesn't apply to you. It will be on the test.

Here's something that may interest the rest of you Houston area drivers---new super centers planned by the DPS. I read it in the Brazosport Facts (Brazoria County paper). It requires a subscription log-in so I will cut and paste the main part. The first of the article is about how slow the Angleton office is. ( hahaha--they should experience a Houston office). I'm only posting what the DPS said about the new offices....

“We’re working on things to make this better. We’re in the process of building six new Driver License Mega-Centers,” said Tom Carter, senior regional manager of Region 2A of the Driver License Division.

Two centers will be built in the Dallas area, and the others will be built in San Antonio, Austin, Rosenberg and Spring.
The Rosenberg location will be at Highway 59 South and Highway 36 and the Spring location will be at 4740 Spring Cypress Road. The Houston area locations are projected to open Sept. 1
.

These “Mega-Centers” will be significantly larger than a typical driver’s license office and will each have a minimum of 25 employees. They will require the majority of Texas DPS’ budget.

“The majority of that money is going to staff the new centers, and of course a good portion will go to building the centers and to new technology,” Carter said. “When you start adding the number the people we’re adding, that’s a lot of dollars in salary.”

Carter hopes these centers will help DPS achieve its goal of reducing driver’s license office wait times to 30 minutes for a renewal and 45 minutes for everything else.

“This will give us 25 percent more staff to deal with the current population,” Carter said. “We also won’t be closing down any of the current locations.” Carter said he beleives building the centers is a step in the right direction.

“These Mega-Centers will increase customer service and will be a great opportunity,” Carter said. “It will help, but nothing will help overnight.”
