Minor (i hope) error on DS 156 - HELP

Okay, so here's a question...I just re-did the DS 156 together with my fiancee via skype, and I was unaware of this, but you can actually save this document and email it. I thought you only had the print only option. Since i can save this, I assume I can just email it to her and she can print it and that's the end of our problem, right? So this way she doesn't actually have to sit down and do it by herself, and since we did the form together I don't have to put that it was "prepared by someone else" (question 39 & 40), nor do i have to sign it. Essentially we prepared the form together. I assume this question refers to if someone does the whole thing independently, like a lawyer or fiancee without any help from the immigrant?

Is this all correct? What am i missing? This seems like it's clearly the easiest option given our situation. Instead of her doing it by herself at an internet cafe and struggling with the English, we just did together while skyping and I email her the document, she slaps her photos on it, signs it, and that's it, correct? I mean, is there some way they can scan the bar code and they will see the IP address where it was created and then give her a hard time or tell her it's invalid or something?

I don't know..it just seems like this is clearly the easiest way to handle our predicament, and I'm curious as to why no one suggested it. Or maybe i'm doing something against the rules that I'm not seeing or understanding.

Any feedback on this?

Sorry, didn't realize about the barcode. We never used this online form so I was working under the logic of downloaded PDFs. It's always better safe than sorry with this.

it is ok that you're the one who filled the form :) nothing to worry, all my docs it was my fiance who filled it up and it is ok, now that we got noa2 i will let him fill the DS-156 for me, nothing to worry :)and oh don't worry about the prepared by someone else.

That sounds fine. I don't believe the option to save it existed when I did it... if it works (saving it) then by all means do it. There won't be a problem with that. Don't worry about the "prepared by" it's more for attorneys or other third parties.

I will admit I find it a little insulting that you're "curious as to why no one suggested it"... it's not my job to investigate all YOUR options and your statement makes it appear like we're at fault for not giving you that option. When we could just as easily say, figure it out yourself.

Wow, that wasn't meant to be insulting at all, but i guess i could see why it could be taken that way. If the save option didn't exist when you did it, then that's exactly the type of thing I was curious about. I was also afraid I wasn't "allowed" to do it this way (Because i could not sign the form as the preparer" and that's why no one suggested doing it this way. I actually told my fiancee to hold off on gluing her photos on the forms until i spoke with you all today to be sure everything was okay.

Evidently the option to save it is something new, and I had been under the impression I just missed it the first time.

I was not trying to be insulting at all, I was genuinely surprised that no one knew this (presumably common) issue could be fixed corrected so easily. Much easier than having my fiancee skip an English exam and stress out making sure she was filling everything in properly. I know she could use the same forms and just transplant the answer, but the online form looks different than the final PDF form, so I could've seen her making some other minor different mistake that we could've stressed out about.

Again I apologize if my wording offended you or anyone else...I didn't mean it that way it all. Some of these questions there are no answers for other than discussing things with other people and getting the best decision. As I said before we had tried calling the embassy, but my fiancee was told they only answer questions about the K-1 from 2-4pm on Thursday, and that was really pushing it to the last minute.

Anyway thanks for helping

If the form is correct now and the saved form looks like the one you printed when she prints it, then I see no issue at all and I would glue the pictures to it.

Trust me when I say this is not a deniable "offence".

yes, the form she received and printed looks identical to the first one i shipped her, only this time it is correct : )

When I wrote those words earlier there was zero part of me that was thinking "these people should be doing my work for me". That was not my mindset at all.

I tried to explain my wording and thought process and i think it makes perfect sense. Sorry again if I offended you. I was just a little surprised that no one else knew i could just save the form and email it. Usually people here who have been through the process have helped inform me...this is apparently the first time I've informed someone of something, and I didn't realize that's what was happening. I thought that the option to save the DS 156 had always been there , I just missed it the first time I did it. Apparently this is a change that has been made. I hope that all makes sense.

This is why we have these discussions on here....so people can learn new things and people now and in the future can get the best advice. And while it is a forum for helping people, obviously, I never expect people to "do my work" for me. Sometimes it's easier to ask a question that someone can quickly answer, as opposed to racking your brain and your nerves digging through information for hours and hours. I kinda thought that was the purpose of this forum.

I'm not the type of person who likes to get into arguments or offend people on the internet. It was just a misunderstanding and some poor wording on my part, and please know that as i had been typing all this stuff last night I was stressed out of my mind. :bonk:

Great :) Then you're all set for her interview :)

I understand you don't mean it that way and I also understand this process is REALLY stressful. Just like I don't mean for you to be upset at possibly offending anyone. I was just telling you how it read (to me). Heck I could just be being oversensitive again. But like you said, now we know there's a save option. Unfortunately a lot of forms are "you cannot save a complete version of this form". They didn't use to be that way, they just changed it one day which for people like me who save electronic AND paper copies it's really annoying (but I have a program called cutepdf that prints as PDF's).

I honestly did not mention you filling it out, saving it and sending it to her to print at the time I was replying to you. An oversight on my part because my husband had no working printer at his house when he filled his out and was able to save it with the bar code and get it printed at a printer shop near his home. I guess I was just thinking of answering your immediate questions about re-doing the form and bar code over again and not alternate solutions to your fiancee having little time to fill it out.

Glad you got it all fixed and worked out now. :)

No worries...I was stressed out and probably not being real clear.

Anyway, feeling much better now...but I suspect Friday (interview day) i will be nervous as hell and looking at my phone every 4 seconds waiting for her to contact me.

My husband was at work :D He told me that his colleagues were laughing at him cause he was bouncing all over the place. When i came through on the K1 he had school and then work. You're not allowed phones in class but he told his teacher he would have his phone out and if it rung he was answering it because I was immigrating. He was SO nervous and excited and unable to concentrate. Then he had work and the same problems. Lol. He was at the airport 3 hours early so that he could be sure he didn't miss me or have trouble finding a park and so I wasn't waiting :P Adorable :D

If the Bar code is on file for the DS-156, then my fiance will have 20 different versions with 20 differnet mistakes on file at the Embassy. Barcode is to be scanned at the Embassy.

You bring the corrected one of course. You need 2 of the corrected one. You can just shred the one with the mistake. It has a mistake and is not needed.
