Questions on I-130

Hi all,

My huband and I are gathering information for our I-130. We have tried to find a lawyer who was commenting that our case will be a tough case. I don't know what can I do to make things easier.

1) We didn't have joint bank account / property. Since we have lived at two different countries, my husband was trying to look for house in the states. We would like to make the decision of the house after my arrival to the states. We are completely financial independent to each other during our courtship. And we are planning to have joint acct in the states later. Question - is there a way to work around it and proof the US govt that we do have intent to setup a joint property and accounts.

2) I have been in the states to study and work for 11 years. I had left the states before my visa expired. The lawyer said this is going to be a bad sign for the govt saying that I am using marriage as a tool for the green card. I am upset when i heard that. I met my husband almost two year before my departure. We had been friends. Until 10 months before my departure, we started to date and maintained long distant relationship ever since. We had maintained for almost a year of long distant relationship and we had decided that we really want to spend our life together for the rest of our lives. So we married at HK last month. I know I marry for the right reason. But we are worry the govt will see it otherwise.

Please suggest any way to make this works?

Thank you....

Sounds like the lawyer is trying to scare you, in order to justify a large fee. Based only on what you say here, I don't see any big red flags.

bad lawyers is like bad underwear - you only feel better after you change them.

i think you dont need a joint account as of now.all you need is that you guys have a proof that you been together for a long time and have proof that there is a communication showing your relationship with each other such as mails, email, phone calls and pictures that you spend time each other

If you can be listed as one another's beneficiary on let's say company health insurance program this would be good. Also you may be listed as beneficiary on the bank accounts that you may have in both countries even though they are not joint accounts. You will be more vested in your visa journey, like us on this website, than a lawyer.

I read nothing here that says fake, fraud, scam or you need Mr. Lawyer. What you do need is proof of your on-going relationship. Pictures of you two with family, friends, out and about, Visa stamps of when you traveled together, boarding passes, Wedding pics, ring receipt, I know this may be hard since you lived together but emails, chat logs, text logs, Skype. You can always get joint accounts and such later down the road.

I would highly suggest go to your countries embassy reviews and ask your country people and see the kinds of questions asked .
