my case status shows my application is in line for interview scheduling. does anyone know how long that may take? i am filing in the detroit office.

You will usually get a letter with the interview date in less than 30 days.

USCIS:

01/03/2013 - I-130 Sent

01/08/2013 - NOA1

04/08/2013 - NOA2 (Approved)

My status has been like that since August 15 almost a month now and still no letter. Should I call the number?

I would call just to see if anything went wrong and maybe tell you why it's taking so long.

I'm at the same office, and got the same status as you since August 27, so far haven't got the interview letter yet :(

polar1979 - I am not on the tracking list, but I have the Exact same dates as you and filing from the Detroit Office (including update on 8/27 saying that I was placed in line on 8/9). I called USCIS yesterday, as it has been over the 30 day mark, and the response I got was that the current processing time for Detroit field office is 5 months and that I will get an interview letter sometime within the 5 month time period. The agent was not able to help me any further. Did anyone else call USCIS and got a different response?

Is there a local Philly office number that I can call to confirm whether they have actually mailed the letter out or not? Should I take an Infopass and try to inquire about it in person? Or should I just sit back, relax, and simply wait for the letter to arrive in the mail one day!

Just chill and congratulations! Scheduled for interview does not mean that they mailed the letter exactly on that date. And 7th was Friday, so there is no way they mailed it on Saturday. You will probably get the letter by the end of this week.

As mentioned "scheduled for interview" does not mean that they have generated an interview date for you. You may or may not receive an interview date for months. It all depends how busy your local office is.

Congratulations! I have the same day on my notice too. My office local office is Boston, Ma. No letter yet, but I will post any changes.
