Yitzhak Shamir, Former Israeli Prime Minister, Dies at 96, Officials Say

Yitzhak Shamir, who emerged from the militant wing of Israel’s pre-state militia and served as prime minister longer than anyone except David Ben-Gurion, promoting a muscular Zionism and expansive settlement in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, died Saturday. He was 96. His death was announced by the Israeli government. As head of the right-wing Likud bloc, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu now leads, Mr. Shamir served as premier from 1983 to 1984 and from 1986 to 1992. He had withdrawn from public life over the past decade, silenced by Alzheimer’s disease.

Another terrorist bites the dust.

Yitzhak Shamir (born Icchak Jaziernicki, sometimes written Yitzhak Yezernitsky, in what is now Belarus) was a member of the Jewish terror organizations Irgun and LEHI (Stern Gang.) In addition to his countless war crimes against Palestinian civilians, he is the man who personally authorized the assassinations of Lord Moyne (the British minister in Palestine) in 1944, and Count Folke Bernadotte (the U.N. envoy) in 1948. Some historians say he also masterminded a failed attempt to murder the British high commissioner, Sir Harold MacMichael.

Neither Jewish ethics nor Jewish tradition can disqualify terrorism as a means of combat. We are very far from having any moral qualms as far as our national war goes. We have before us the command of the Torah, whose morality surpasses that of any other body of laws in the world: "Ye shall blot them out to the last man." But first and foremost, terrorism is for us a part of the political battle being conducted under the present circumstances, and it has a great part to play...

Bernadotte's murder was particularly appalling, as he had helped save many Jews from the Nazis. But Shamir didn't want Bernadotte to carry out his official duty to enforce the U.N. partition plan, which would internationalize Jerusalem and limit the new Jewish State to the 55% of historic Palestine detailed under the plan, and which the Israeli government had agreed to. Bernadotte's murder removed the impediment to Israel's annexation of an additional 23% of Palestine - up to what is now known as The Green Line.
