right il be making more than that so just pay the taxes then claim them back at the end of the year to save any issues?

Even if you are going to make less than $6000 a year you should have tax withheld and you claim it back at the end of the year, that’s how my school’s advisor had told us.

When I was in school at end of the year my school’s international office used to invites IRS to come out to the school do a presentation and help the people filing for first time.

It was very helpful, I guess that is based on the size of the school and if your international student’s office is inviting the IRS or not.

Payroll/HR cannot advise you on what to take out of your pay checks. You have to tell them your preferences, they can only tell you what your options are so the advice about asking them is not accurate.

If you live in a state/city with income taxes, I'd have them take those out too so you don't end up owing. It's always better to get the taxes back then to owe them.
