It's impossible to prove God exists or doesn't exist, but having faith in the existence of God isn't merely an imaginary thing. What is reality? Define what is real?

I was watching an episode of Nova dealing with string theory. The host (a very articulate black scientist) was talking about how string theory leads us to a universe with 19 dimensions, and how the Big Bang (the creation of our universe) might be the result of these dimensions "banging into" each other. It was totally mind blowing for me.

And that's why I believe in God. Not because someone tells me some guy a long time ago had some really important things to say (which people ever since debate about incessantly and exploit for their own agenda). But because we can never understand everything. No matter how much we figure out, no matter how far science can explain things, there will still be things we won't understand. We will always have questions. And I believe there has to be a purpose, a reason for this existence.

OK, enough deep thoughts for today from me. Back to mindless coding. :)

I totally saw that too. It was very fascinating. Didn't make me believe in God, although I respect your reasons for doing so. I do have a lot of awe and respect for nature and the as-yet (or permanently) inexplicable. Maybe that is a way of believing in God.

Finite means that it is limited in its capacity to explain or understand all things. For example, even scientist's have concluded that science can only take us so far in our understanding of the physical world. Quantum physics is just one field where science has reached it's limits, and it's not just a limit, but also we are aware of the imperfections of our logic (Wittgenstein).

I know what finite means ;) but how can something be finite when it is contantly changing and moving forward. In other words Quantum physics didnt exist until someone made a discovery and someone else built upon it. We can say we have reached our limits but history has proven that this is not the case.

Yes, but do you believe that our capacity for understanding all things is only limited by our knowledge? Or perhaps the very structure of human language and logic is such that it is impossible to completely and infinitely know everything? To me, putting ones entire faith in human logic is egocentric. Unless you believe that logic exists outside of human intellect - that it is something we merely have discovered. If so, then who put it there? What started all things? That to me is where religion is born...from our desire to embrace what cannot be understood (the infinite)...the mystery of life itself. There is a mathamatical symbol for infinity, but we say it is an imaginary number which we can never know because it is infinite - never ending. That to me is what the term God, means. The Alpha and Omega.

Do I believe our capicity for understanding all things is only limited by our knowledge? Our cpacity no, as I have indicated as we make new discoveries we expand our knowledge which in turn allows us to understand something and move it from the realm of the mystical to the realm of science. Take for example when an early humaniod was out on the grassy plains and a sudden storm came up and lets say a lighting strike caused a fire. To that early humaniod that would seem like the hand of God and fire would seem llike a mystical force. Eventually we learned what fire was and it was moved from mystical force to scientific explanation. I will grant you this though, even though we can explain the lighting whose to say that there isnt something still a bit mystical about the lighting even though we can explain it.

Do I think humans will eventually be able to move everythng from the mystical to the scientific, no. Nor do I put all of my faith in human intellect or logic, but I do prefer the idea that the things out there are just wating to be discovered that will help us move more things from the mystical to the scientific.

Thank you for a most interesting exchange.

Which then drives the true scientist to keep looking until that which they do not know they begin to try and understand. Just because you do not know something does not mean you never will, it means you are presented with a choice. Try to figure it out or take it on faith. Will we ever know how the universe was formed, maybe not. But that wont stop a scientist from observing a new galaxy and watching how it is formed.

Which in turns shows just how littel we know. it is a vicious cycle that we try to over-come. have a long way to go I am sure. btw... about the forming of galaxies... I posted a link from yahoo... interesting indeed!

I too have faith in the human mind's ever expanding capacity for knowledge and understanding, however, I never feel that science is in competition or conflict with my faith in God or vice versa. :star:

....and as James (Mirrorgate) stated above, the more questions answered lead to more questions.

I think If you and Richard Dawkins were in the same room, I know who I would think was the dumbest! Richard Dawkins is a great and very intelligent Biologist, he puts forward very interesting views and backs them up with FACTS....

Oh, no! Paul C and I agree on something. :P

As someone who has been in the same room (well, a lecture hall) with Richard Dawkins,

I can confirm that he is an extremely intelligent man.
