I know it sounds weird but gas prices are no different than gold or corn. It fluctuates with market forces and they are the same the world over. To be sure, it fluctuates with supply and demand and you must include the price of refining and all, but after it is all said and done you can buy gasoline on the floor in NY, Hong Kong or Rio for the same price in the international open market.

Can you buy gasoline in 13 gallon amounts on the exchanges? If not, then I don't see your point.

I don't buy my gasoline on trading floors - they won't let me back my car in

Exactly.

You can buy as much gas as you want. In fact you can buy non-existent gas in the futures market. You buy it and sell it and never has to take delivery.

I can drive into the futures market and fill up my Honda?

Of course you can. That is where the gasoline in your tank was purchased anyway.

I'm no expert, but aren't you buying gas contracts and not actual gas?

You can buy both.

And I wasn't posting much over the weekend, how the hell did this turn into a gas thread?

Apparently primates in Asia were confused...

The relevance of that to a retail consumer is zero because to oncosts including tax are so disparate

I don't have room for a 500 thousand tonne dead weight ocean going ultra large tanker to unload at my apartment

The fact is that European gasoline is about 3 times the price of US gasoline (at the pump including all charges and tax) and that is why Americans feel comfortable wasting the stuff - and they do waste it

Gasoline is almost a by-product of oil refining and so wasting gasoline isn't a problem - wasting all the other products of oil is the problem and that isn't a problem if you come from the former confederacy and are a global warming denier

Much better than a bunch of Anglican pomps discussing how good things were back home, and how they can't get a proper pint or boiled mutton anymore.

The quote that always comes to mind when people get into such urinating contests, is that of a famous British author....

"The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

I would strongly disagree. If you are paying an exorbitant price for a gallon of gas because it is taxed, then you need to do something about your government.
