I was of the understanding that the English as spoken in America, especially in the American south, is much closer to the way the language was spoken in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In has been the rest of the English speaking world where the language has devolved.

Some of the inflections in the southern accent are closer to those of certain areas of Britain in the 17th century, but in terms of vocab, no. I highly recommend H L Mencken's "The American Language." Not dry and really incredibly informative. Bill Bryson also has two semi-scholarly books on the topic, "The Mother Tongue" and "Made in America."
