Waiting for My Wife's Social Security Number

I call the local Social Security office today and they said my (K1) wife had to appear in personat at the Social Security office in order to apply; that is, we can't just mail the application in. That's understandable since they need to see the passport and the EAD.

My question is, once that application is submitted, how long does it usually take to get the SS number? They tell me that it depends on Homeland security turning some infomation around for them (also understandable) and it can take anywhere from 1 day to 4 weeks.

I'm just fishing for what peoples' recent experience is in this matter.

In my case I waited till I got married to get my SSN so that I could use my married name and it took me less than 2 weeks

Ours was in hand in about 3 weeks.

I applied with my EAD and took exactly 2 weeks to get approved.
