I just doing my interview for DV with my family. Result of this interview, the officer return whole family passport and give me yellow letter with title

NOTICE OF SUSPENSION, 221G, FURTHER REVIEW NEEDED

"Your application for a nonimmigrant visa has not been refused. At preesent, your application must be suspended under section 221g of the immigration and nationality Act, as amended (INA), for further review at the Departement of State or by another agency. Embassy xxxxxx will resume action on your application after we are informed that this review is completed. Please be advised, however, we do not control the pace or scope of this review.

  • Administrative processing (They give this x on the checkbox)
  • Waiver of inelegibility

When the process is complete, we will contact you with further instructions or to advise you that your visa is ready for pick-up.

AFTER you are informed that your visa is ready for pick-up, you may return to the Embassy on any weekday. You will need to bring this notice and the white ticket with your pick-up number in order to retrieve your passport.

First time I received this yellow letter, the officer told me if my visa not rejected yet, they need further review and contact me soon via email or phone. Because of that I don't look detail on this letter until I at home. Now I confused with some sentences :

  1. I was apply for Diversity Visa which is immigrant visa but on that yellow letter there's words "Your application for a nonimmigrant visa". Is the officer give me wrong letter ?
  2. What is section 221g ? I already look and read on travel.state.gov but still not understand. Can someone told me what this mean.
  3. The officer return all family passport but in this letter say if the visa ready I need bring this letter and white ticket to retrive passport. Weird isn't it ?

I have seen this a few times on various sites so I wouldn't worry too much. Even look at the Admin processing section here and you will see a dv 2011 thread where lots of people had been put under AP and some even got the visa at the last hour on 30th Sept!

I have seen it split as to people being given the passports back and others where it has been retained so I also don't think I would worry about that too much either. They usually just contact you again if successful and then ask you to resubmit passport for the visa.

I think alot of this is some people are automatic AP cases when they are from specific countries whilst a security check is done. If there was something else with the application that they were unhappy with as in you not being eligible, they would have said it to you on the day and denied you outright. You would also have a fairly good idea what they are looking for if it was a case they needed more info.

We are in AP for a specific qualifying reason. its hell but I still say you are better in AP than refused!

Best of luck and I hope you get good news soon.

1. Yes, looks like a mistake

2. Basically, your case is going through Adminstrative Processing (AP); additional name and security checks are most likely. You don't say which country you are from but for example people from the middle east/ Muslims often go through this.

3. Yes looks like he gave you the wrong letter. If the AP is successful they will contact you to send in your passports to get the visa put in. There is a chance you will have a seocnd interview, but unlikely.

Thank you buddy2012 and Penguin_ie for answering my questions.

Personally I better got straight answer after interview rather like this.

This situation made me tired and screw up my upcoming plans.

Now I'll try to think positive like both of you say better AP then rejected.

I almost forgot, before the interview start in Administrative check process, I must fill again for DS-230 in front of admin counter for whole family. Is this something related with AP ?
