I think the law is ridiculous. According the constitution, some powers belong to the states, and some to the federal government - immigration enforcement being one of the federal powers. This law completely muddles the two, and I'm sure will have negative impact on communities and local economies. I watched an interesting documentary last night "Liberty 9500" that highlighted a similar situation in Virginia...

Apparently, you've never been through a CBP checkpoint in Arizona or Texas. Those are inside US borders, manned by federal law enforcement officers, and they're going to ask you for the same documents that the Arizona law enforcement officers are going to ask you for. The only difference is the Arizona law enforcement officer needs a reason to pull you over first. The CBP officers check everyone.

The problem is Feds not doing enough to control the illegal immigration.

If Fed govt would properly enforce the law than states don't need to step up.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I agree that immigration needs to be reformed, but disagree that police questioning people with accents and dark skin who are pulled over during a routine traffic stop is the proper way to do it.

If the states really wanted to help they would attach some of their officers to the federal CBP agents at the borders.

Passing populist laws is nothing more than grandstanding. If they meant business they would work in concert with the Feds.

Ya because the Feds have shown what a shining example they are in regards to upholding the immigration laws. I'd rather put my money on the locals.

It was a sad day for the 4th amendment when they added those as well.

In Arizona, in particular, they beefed the force with additional agents, as requested by the Governor. There is no reason she should not be willing to cooperate. After all no one doubts her noble reasons are a result of her unmitigated concern with the people of Arizona.

Yep - I had to do some work at White Sands and took the wife and step daughter with me. Flew into El Paso and drove to Alamagordo New Mexico. On the drive from El Paso to Alamagordo, we were stopped at a check point. Showed my drivers license, and and my wife and daughter presented their green cards and away we went.

I have been going there for about 20 years and the checkpoint has been there longer than that.

Si, man (sigh, man). The various "failure to identify" laws in each state -- sadly upheld by the ghastly Hiibel decision by the Supreme Court -- also muddy the waters.

In regard to CBP checkpoints, the most professional has seemed to be the one north of Laredo, Texas -- they efficiently confirm citizenship and let you go. Conversely, everyone who goes through the checkpoint south of Alpine, TX is assumed to be a criminal, and must answer a crapload of intrusive questions.

If you are only a passenger they have no right to ask for anything, so long as you do not engage with them in any way shape of form.

In a stop and identify state, they can legally ask your name and usually your address, though no license is required since you aren't driving.
