Tanzanian Divorce

Has anyone had any experience with applying for a K1 visa when the non USC has been through a Tanzanian divorce? We will be applying for the K1 visa but the only doubt in my mind is the divorce certificate that I will be sending from my previos marriage (long story) in Tanzania. I'm a UK citizen by the way. Its been very hard to obtain the divorce - bribes being the only way it would seem to get one without me having to actually go to TZ. I havent seen my 'ex husband' for 5 years and i was kinda tricked into it but again - long story. I'm worried that the us will question the divorce. We filled for it on the 4th sept and received the swahili certificate but had to wait 45days (tomoro) for the English version to be released. I have no idea about Tanzanian Law so any info would be helpful.

I am a little confused, if the divorce certificate( regardless of how u got it) is valid in tanzania, why would it not be valid in the US/UK.

06/06/05 I-130 NOA1

06/14/05 K-3 NOA1

07/08/05 k-3 NOA2

07/22/05 K-3 leaves NVC to Lagos

08/08/05 Hubby picks up interview packet from embassy

11/17/05 K-3 interview (denied, C.O refused to take co-sponsor for k-3)

12/16/05 I-130 NOA2

01/03/06 NVC assigns case number

02/15/06 Case complete (thank you James Shortcuts- only 6 weeks!)

04/19/06 tired of waiting, filed k-3 #2 ( petition is still lost in oblivion)

09/11/06 NVC scheduled CR-1 interview/ on to Lagos (thank God after 7 months of waiting!)

10/14/06 Interview date (success!)

10/18/06 Hubby goes to pick up visa- not ready ( ugh what's going on!)

10/19/06 Visa in hand ( thank you God!)

10/29/06 Together at last :)

Whole process 1 year and 4 months

I understand her concern.......It depends on the government agency you are presenting the form to, just because it is valid in the USA, doesn't mean it will be accepted.

Case in point - my Ghanaian marriage certificate is valid/recognized in the USA, BUT the California DMV refused to accept it to let me change my name. However, Social Security and the US Department of State (Passports), both Federal level, accepted it with no problems.

Sent I130 September 23, 2004

Approved January 5, 2005

Interview date July 21, 2005

Told to pick up visa October 2005, but no visa issued.

Case went missing for six months - from October 2005 through April 2006

Emailed Embassy constantly, sent letter directly to director of Embassy by fax and snail mail

Response received April 2006 from Director - full of inaccuracies, but placed my husband's name on list to enter Embassy.

Husband entered Embassy in late April - told case worker working on our case quit, they were short staffed so no one touched our case; told to return in July 2006 to pick up visa.

July 2006 - no visa issued still, told case went to US for secondary approval.

August 2006 - US said case was approved in January 2005 and they did not have it.

September, October, November and December 2006, Embassy kept insisting they did not have our case. I emailed EVERY day until finally, response said my husband was called on the phone to pick the visa up six months earlier. My husband has NEVER been called on the phone by the Embassy.

Told to come pick up visa January 19 - said the "Ghanaians who print the visas didn't print them"

Changed date on blue slip and told to come back. Finally received the visa February 2, 2007.

THANK GOD!

Arriving in USA very very soon and I can't wait!!!!!!

Does the beneficiary have to send a divorce certificate at the time of the K-1 petition? Isn't it just at the time of the interview that the beneficiary needs to prove herself eligible to marry (prove that she is divorced)? In that case it would be what the UK consulate deems valid as a divorce certificate. Maybe easier for you to check with them?

Good luck to you and enjoy Arizona!

What grounds did the California DMV give to reject it?
