How many of you saw your significant other online before flying across the country to meet in person?

When we met, I did not have a webcam and wasn't comfortable with them. I did see him on cam but he could not see me. We talked a long time before I bought one and he saw me. I believe it was 6-9 months later he saw who he was chatting with all those nights :-). His family and friends joked that he did not know who he was talking to and I could have been a man playing a joke on him. When I went to see him face to face the first time, my flight was delayed. I barely made it to Morocco and I was 12 hours late. No way of contacting him (cell died and could not stop at a pay phone). There he was waiting patiently, praying I was really coming. (I loved him even more for waiting and knowing in his heart I would be there. He did not live close to the airport) We were the last people to leave the airport that night. There were no other flights that evening. We had to stay in Marrakesh the night because my luggage did not arrive with me. We went to a hotel and checked into two rooms. We traveled the next day to home. We reflect back to that night many times and it always makes us smile :P:blush:

My husband still doesn't know what a webcam does.

Hahahah..I'm cracking up for real! My husband knows what one is but when he saw me on cam he told his brother...."brother I think my wife is very FAT!"...not that he didn't love me anyway, but he truly thought I was like 400 plus pounds! Wonder what type of cam he was using???? :bonk: :bonk: :bonk:

Evidently his brother knew better (and how his webcam made everyone look) so before picking me up at the airport my brother-in-law made a bet with my hubby that "I", the only white woman standing in front of the airport that day, would find my hubby before he found me.

Guess who won? Yep, the brother-in-law cause my husband was looking for a "777" in front of the airport!:rofl: He was so amazed when he saw me and kept telling me WOW...you are so beautiful (and I'm a stout girl...), but I guess I was smaller than him, he was super happy! :D

I will never forget it!

Met my fiance online, exchanged one picture "head shot" each. I was covered (scarf). He saw me on cam after a week and then I saw him on cam two weeks later (he had to get one, lol). We chat everyday for many hours as well as texts, phone calls, emails, pictures and mail.

I went to visit him after ONE month and so far I have visited him a total of three times in the last 7 months! I am blessed and couldn't be happier.

No surprises for us except for the fact that we fell in love unexpectedly and simply cannot wait to be a family whether it is here in the US or in his country ;-)

I tell everyone I can about VJ. It has been a blessing for me and many others that I know have had successful relationships with a love from abroad.

I truly wish each and every one of you the very best for this process and the future journey's that we all have to look forward to. :luv:

Wasn't there someone on here years ago who discovered the person she had been chatting wasn't the person who met her at the airport, but married him anyway? I can't remember if that was in MENA or Sub-Saharan Africa, but I think I recall stumbling on that in the archives once.

I believe you are correct.

or when they met in person realised her "husband" did not speak english at all and that she had been talking to his english speaking friends...sigh

who did it work with ... please spill

I didn't know the ladies involved; just saw their pics. I don't know if they're on VJ (but if I see their pictures pop up, I'll let you know :D)

I feel Mithra should put this as either a member title or signature lol... " have much higher standards of conduct than many." LOL!

And yep, it it were me, I'd drop that dude. That's not cool at all.

I figure they deserve each other.

This is quite possible! Of course, voicing this sentiment (or an even shorter form, "Dur.") can be controversial.

"Dur."

Yep! It must have been magical to see. I am sure there was nectar of the gods.

There is always plenty of NOTG in the internet cafes

After I recovered from nearly suffocating from laughter, I am pretty sure I would have to shut down any conversation which included NOTG.

Highly unlikely, though not improbable, that a Nigerian Male of marrying age does not know what a web cam does.

That one pass me Madam.

Choose to believe or not. I had to help him with the basic turning on and off, getting to the internet and finding things. Maybe the young are internet savy but the older generation isn't. Not every nigerian here is a graduate of the Lagos school of romance scams.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

He has his own laptop, I don't trust him with mine. I always know I am in trouble when he is heading toward me carrying the laptop. He went to the local school and took the beginning computer user class and struggled to get a C. I was trying to explain to him Skype and I think he thought I was telling him fairy tales.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
