Hey all,

I was going over the guide for adjustment of status, and noticed that for the marriage certificate, it states that it should be a "certified copy." What exactly is a certified copy? I'm a lil worried becuase I took my marriage cert and made a photocopy of it, and on the photocopy it has the word "VOID" all over it becuase it is printed on a special paper that cannot be copied.

Oh, another quick question, in the guide it says to send the payment with a money order so you can track it, but how do you track a money order? All the money orders I've gotten thru Walmart I haven't seen any way to track it.

Thanks in advance!

Janda

Go to your local department of Vital statistics, or department that issued your marriage certificate and get an certified copy of it to send in with the AOS paperwork

Thank you for filling out your profile completely I was able to see that you are in Chicago and provide better info.

The money order should have a stub with the order number and company that issued it, you should be able to contact that company to see if it has been cashed.

Agreed with the others you need to get a certified copy from the place where you got your original marriage certificate.... we got 4 copies at the time because we knew we would need to send some away for diffrent things....

We paid by personal check so we could see when the checks were cashed...

Good luck

Kezzie

If you read the instructions on the I-485, it says that K-1 people should include a *COPY* of their marriage certificate. There is NO mention of the word "certified"

Our marriage cert. (issued in North Carolina) had no problems with photocopying. We just sent a plain photocopy, no certified no notarized. So far we have had no problems. But if your marriage cert. says VOID on photocopies you might have to get another TRUE copy from the office who issues marrigae certificates in your area.
