Hi everyone,

I have a question. I am a resident in the States and my sister wants to come and visit me. She works for a cruise line and just renewed her transit visa. She would like to stay for like a month or so.

Now we know she can't stay that long with a transit visa, so I'm just wondering what she can do.

Can she come to the States with her transit visa and then apply for a tourist visa while she's here?

Or does she have to apply outside the States?

What would happen to her transit visa? She might be taken a break from working with her cruise line, though she might as well decide to sign for another contract.

Thanks all for your help :)

Tourist visas are not applied for or issued inside the USA unless it is for a country other than the USA.

To get a tourist visa for the USA you have to apply outside the USA for it.

She needs to apply for a tourist visa in advance of her trip, from outside the US. She can hold both a tourist visa and a crewman's visa at the same time.

She needs to apply for a tourist visa while outside the US...no COS is allowed for holders of transit or crew visas (C1/D)
