What are the changces of a person of becoming a citizen when he has a criminal record. I am asking on behalf of a relative of mine, who came here on lottery based Green card. Some years later, he got in trouble with the law( He does not disclose the exact issue) and they confiscated his Green card at the airport while he was coming back from his home country. He has been fighting his case for 8 years. After the court decided to cancel his residency, the court allowed him to reapply for Green card through his US citizen spouse. His Petition was accepted and he was recently issued a permanent Green card again. My question is when applying for citizenship, you have to show good moral character, and having a criminal history(which could be something serious)what are his chances to become a US citizen?

It all depends on what crimes he committed.

Certain crimes are a permanent bar for naturalization (obtaining US citizenship). Sex crimes, drug related crimes, crimes involving moral turpitude, etc are permanent bars.

Other crimes can be overcome.

Withing knowing the nature of his crimes, no one can tell you what his chances are to become a US citizen.

Rather than guessing at what may happen, it may be wise for your relative to consult a qualified immigration attorney where all the facts and circumstances can be discussed.

When you say "crimes involving moral turpitude" you are talking about more than one, correct? (I assume so since you said crimes)

A single crime of moral turpitude is enough for a lifetime ban from the US.

There are many different crimes of moral turpitude.
