My grandmother's interview at the Mumbai embassy is scheduled for 7/21/12. If she passes, how long does she have to come to the US? We don't want her to come until next May...can she come after 10 months? I'm hearing conflicting responses - 2 months, 6 months, etc.

I called the NVC and they said it's up to the embassy....Any experiences would be appreciated!

An immigrant visa is typically valid for 6 months. The embassy can choose to extend or renew the visa. She should ask at the embassy when she is there.

What type of visa is she applying for? As stated above, typically the visa is good for 6 months (K-1, tourist etc) . You can ask the Embassy to extend that time, but when the visa is actually issued it will have an expiration date on it and entry into the US must occur on or before that date. IMHO trying to strech the visa until next May is iffy and one has to question why did you apply so early? At the interview, ask if it is possible to extend the visa beyond the typical 6 month validity period--if not, then she will either have to come early or apply again.

Good luck,

Dave

Generally, an immigration visa is valid for six months as long as the medical exam is valid. If the medical exam will expire before the six months, then the visa will expire when the medical exam expires.

Your grandmother can ask to delay her interview until she is ready to immigrate. However, this is risky because there may be delay in her paperwork when she is ready to immigrate.

Your grandmother can apply for an extension (essentially, another immigration visa in the same category). Expect to pay additional fees for the new medical exam and new visa. This will be up to the US Embassy/Consulate where you grandmother will interview.

IMHO, it is better to pay more money to reissue the medical exam and visa rather than delay the interview and risk a paperwork snafu.
