President Barack Obama has widened his considerable lead over Mitt Romney among registered Latino voters in five key swing states, according to a new poll of 2,000 voters by Latino Decisions and the pro-immigration reform advocacy group America's Voice.

Obama enjoys the biggest lead among Latino voters in Arizona, 74 percent of whom say they favor the president over Romney. On average, Obama is leading Romney 63 to 27 percent among Latinos in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Nevada and Virginia. Analysts estimate that Romney would need at least 40 percent of the Latino vote overall to win the general election, although that estimate changes depending on turnout.

One factor behind the incumbent's significant lead may be an increase in enthusiasm for Obama following his announcement last week that he would offer immunity from deportation to as many as 800,000 young illegal immigrants who were brought to the country as children. Fifty-eight percent of Latino voters surveyed between June 17 and 21 said they feel more enthusiastic about Obama now, compared to 9 percent who said they felt less enthusiastic about him. Overall, 60 percent of Latinos said they were "very enthusiastic" about voting in November, compared to 47 percent in a November 2011 Latino Decisions poll.

While Latino voters are all U.S. citizens and not directly affected by Obama's move, previous Latino Decisions polling has shown that more than half of all registered Latino voters know someone who is undocumented and that the vast majority favor a path to legalization for illegal immigrants in the country.

On Thursday, Romney spoke for the first time about his plans for immigration reform at a conference for the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO). His plan includes increasing visas for legal immigrants, a mandatory employment verification program, and a path to legalization for young illegal immigrants who enlist in the military. He criticized Obama's immigration plan as temporary and reversible, and said Democrats were taking Latinos' votes for granted. On Friday afternoon, Obama will address the same group.

The poll has a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points overall and 4.9 percentage points on the state-specific data.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Yes he did. What happens to all our relatives, waiting after doing immigration the honest way. They get pushed aside to pursue the entry of those who are illegal.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

Only if you believe that it is a good thing for this country to stay as blonde and blue-eyed as possible and that it is OK to kick all these kids that grew up here out.

Did your wife actually go through the legal US immigration door or did you fly her into Mexico City and have her take a bus across the border?

While I might agree on being skeptical about deporting minors, no reason to bring racism into the picture. Being in the country illegally has nothing to do with one's race or ethnicity.

That is certainly how I feel. Do you honestly believe that racism is NOT a factor in this for a large percentage of those opposed to such measures?

President Barack Obama speaks to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO)

Obama hits Romney on immigration, vows to seek long-term reform

By Olivier Knox, Yahoo! News | The Ticket – 6 hrs ago

President Barack Obama told a gathering of Latino officials from around the country on Friday that he would push for comprehensive immigration reform if he wins in November.

Obama, speaking to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) one day after Mitt Romney addressed the group, accused him and Republicans in general of obstructing efforts to overhaul an immigration system that "makes no sense" and is "not good for America."

"And as long as I am president of the United States, I will not give up the fight to change it," he promised.

America needs "immigration reform that finally lives up to our heritage as a nation of laws and as a nation of immigrants, and continues the American story of renewal and energy and dynamism that's made us who we are," he said.

The president, whose administration has deported record numbers of undocumented immigrants, highlighted his decision last week to allow an estimated 800,000 people brought to America as children to stay as long as they meet certain criteria."In the face of a Congress that refuses to do anything on immigration, I've said that I'll take action wherever I can. So my administration has been doing what we can, without the help in Congress," he said, describing his new policy as "lifting the shadow of deportation from deserving young people."

"It's not amnesty. It falls short of where we need to be—a path to citizenship. It's not a permanent fix," Obama said. "But it's precisely because it's temporary, Congress still needs to come up with a long-term immigration solution—rather than argue that we did this the wrong way or for the wrong reasons."

Obama reiterated his support for the Dream Act, legislation to allow undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children to remain legally as long as they serve in the military or attend college.

"I've said time and again: Send me the Dream Act; I will sign it right away," he said.

"Your speaker from yesterday has a different view," Obama said, referring to Romney. "In his speech, he said that when he makes a promise to you, he'll keep it. Well, he has promised to veto the Dream Act, and we should take him at his word."

"And I believe that would be a tragic mistake. You do, too."

Romney's speech to NALEO on Thursday included his first detailed description of what he would do on immigration if elected. He called for increasing the number of immigrant visas, for a mandatory employment verification program and for giving undocumented immigrants who serve in the American military a path to legal status. Romney also assailed Obama's move on Friday as a politically motivated stopgap and accused Democrats of taking Latino votes for granted.

"In 2008, candidate Obama promised NALEO he would create new jobs and end the housing crisis," said Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg. "Four years later, President Obama is back asking for more time. On Day One, Mitt Romney will take our country in a new direction and get our economy back on the right track."

Obama's lead over Romney among Latinos—he is expected to carry that group by double digits.
