I wonder if public opinion would change if every time someone mentioned illegal aliens, undocumented immigrants, unregistered democrats, etc., they called them "foreign invaders" instead.

"Officials weigh tuition policy for foreign invaders."

Dare I say we wouldn't be so apt to accept it?

Unless they actually declare war on behalf of a foreign government, it sounds a little silly. A bit over the top in an Archie Bunker kind of way. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

It's another sign of the times. This country is determined to hit 3rd world status.

It sure appears that way. For the last couple decades the US has done everything in it's power to lower it's standards.

Why not call them "foreign devils" or "evil hordes"? Why not call them "gangs of raping thugs" or "filth-laden alien armies of the devil" or "lucifers squadrons of death" or ......?

Dare I say that it is stupid to apply pejorative labels to groups of people in order to incite intolerance?! :bonk:

I did not think that illegal aliens qualified for EAD cards but with a stroke of his mighty pen Obama fixed that.

Quite Reagan-esque of him, wasn't it?

What Faux News seems to conveniently leave out of the article, is that college tuition is based on state residence, not immigration status. In-state tuition is the same for all residents of Colorado.

The problem is that when you look at it from a factual standpoint, it really is no news at all.

So you think giving the EAD and amnesty to illegals would stop the erosion of middles class?

Did I say that? Now, everyone that's paid attention around this board knows that I am not a fan of illegal immigration. I believe that we ought to seriously focus on removing the economic reward for people to come to this country illegally - or remain here past their welcome - by cracking down on the exploitation of these migrants. I'd be happy to support policies that effectively put any business that hires people that are not eligible to work in this country out of business. But if you think that cracking down on illegal immigration will put this country back on course of shared prosperity, then you're mistaken. You could deport all illegal migrants today but short of any other policy changes, we're still headed towards becoming a banana republic.

Not quite. You see, in order to be a state resident (at least in this here state), you'd have to first be a lawful resident in this country. These folks are not exactly residents in this country. Florida is very specific about this in it's eligibility requirements for in-state tuition.

I agree with you. In theory that is how it should be, but in reality the situation is different. Some of these students are residents in Colorado, work and pay taxes there, their immigration status notwithstanding.

Nope. As of today, in-state tuition eligibility requires legal primary residence in Colorado. Unlawful aliens may be able to show primary residence in Colorado but they still do not have legal residence in Colorado.

In-state status requires domicile (legal, primary residence) in Colorado for the year immediately preceding the first day of class. The insert explains the exceptions to the one-year domicile requirement.

I guess it will all hinge on what one needs to produce in order to prove legal, primary residence: Domicile is defined as your true, fixed, and permanent home and place of habitation. Domicile is a legal characteristic that everyone has, and you can have only one domicile at any one time. Your domicile is your legal, primary residence.

so if you are an illegal alien squatting at someplace where you are not legally able to be (presence on the land/ country) ... then the primary residence is back at the home country (where the person is legal)

You need to be asking that to the Office of the Registrar at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The issue at hand with the discussion in Colorado, and one which is being discussed elsewhere as well, is whether colleges and universities should even be involved in immigration, on one hand. It has little do to with semantics.

There are guidelines for what in-state tuition is, and the system in Colorado is no different, but to the academic world, it is a matter of Federal law, better suited to other halls if past the point of academic discussion.

If you called them anything even remotely negative you'd see public opinion shift overnight. Calling them "undocumented migrants" or something to that effect makes them sound like benevolent little puppy dogs. Almost like we need them here and are better off with them.

Tell that to my grandfather who kicked the sh!t out of the Jerries and the Japs.

So as to not violate TOS, I'm using the above to illustrate that throughout our history this country (yes, even the government) intentionally used pejorative labels to incite intolerance. Why? Because it works!

The government nowadays wants to tolerate foreign invaders and, moreover, PAY THEM to stay here. Ask yourself why?

Then ask yourself why you're OK with that.

Well, the Colorado legislature disagrees with your statement. If what you say were so, then why would there be a need to push legislation affording illegal immigrants a lower than out-of-state but higher than in-state tuition? If they're already eligible for in-state tuition, why were they hoping for this legislation to pass? So that they can payer higher rates than they would at current? Yeah, didn't think so.
