I am asylum applicant waiting for interview date. how risky is to travel on plane within usa with expired visa in passport as picture ID.

Use the passport and have open the BIO page when going thru the security line. The TSA agent will look at the picture in the passport and make certain the name on the passport is the same as the name on the ticket. He will not flip thru the passport--at least the agent that did my MIL when we travelled to NYC only looked at the BIO page. Their job is to ensure the boarding pass and ID match and both are valid allowing you entry into the secure area. It is not their job, nor do they know anything about, immigration--that is for CBP who you will not have any dealing with on a domestic flight.

Enjoy your trip,

Dave

one time the security at the gate looked at my BIO page then he looked through the entire passport! I was really suprised of course it was not an American Passport. Still he was acting like CBP. He took his job really seriously. oh well not sure if he knew what he was reading or what....

Another problem is if you are randomly selected for extra screening; recently happened to me. Then they will check EVERYTHING.

so ya there is risk involve but more time than others you will pass and be fine.

Do you have any documentation that you have applied for asylum and it is pending? If so, bring that.

If your passport is valid you should be OK to go through TSA security.

You need to have some proof that you are in the US legally if you are planning to go to Hawaii, Puerto Rico or any other destination outside the lower 48. In some locations CBT agents may check documents of passengers bound to the mainland.

Good luck!
